    Hi Everyone,

I got a call on Friday afternoon that there is a concern about the u/s we had on Thurs. Baby B looks fine, but Baby A's skull measurement was abnormal. The doctor said it was wider at one point than the other and is called a "strawberry shaped" head. This is an indicator of Trisomy 18, which is fatal. However, none of the other measurements for Baby A were off, which is highly unusual if Trisomy 18 is present. We are being referred to a perinatologist at the University of Minnesota as soon as possible. I'm really hoping they can get us in this week. The peri will do a more detailed u/s and possibly an amnio. My doctor said something about having to do the amnio for both babies though because they wouldn't be able to tell which sac the fluid is being drawn from. I'm not sure I quite understand, but I'll ask more questions when we get to that point. The doctor did say it is entirely possible (maybe even likely) that I have two healthy babies in there. I'm clinging to that hope. I've also done some research and learned from the Trisomy 18 website that seeing only one indicator of Trisomy 18 on an ultrasound makes it possible, but not likely, that the baby has the syndrome. That makes me feel a little better.

DH and I decided to go to the mothers of multiples sale as if we have two healthy babies. We spent $360 and got a van load full of great deals. For a while, we could almost forget about Friday's phone call. In a day or so, I'll fill you all in on what we got.

I'm still suffering from this cold, have not been sleeping well, and I'm in shock from these ultrasound results. So, I think I will come back later to post when I'm thinking more clearly.

    Prayers are welcome.

    Talk to you soon.

I know several people who have been told it was trisomy 18 and then it wasn't. They all had one marker and no others. Hopefully everythings alright

Beth, sorry you are having to worry about this. My cousin's baby had a few markers for Downs Syndrome and her OB told her to expect him to be born with DS. Well he was born perfect, no DS at all. I hope you get into the peri soon and get some answers. :hug99:

Beth, this type of info is really hard to swallow because it's SO - "well, it's possible - not sure, welll......uuummmmm"

Keep your head on straight and take care of yourself!! :hug99: I had some #'s that were off too on one baby (no shape issues, but still) and we did the amnio and that alevitated all of our fears! I hope for the best for you! :hug99:

Beth, Remember that u/s is just a screening, not a test. I have a very good friend whose nuchal testing/1st trimester screening gave her 1 in 11 odds of her baby having Downs. She had the CVS test and she and her DH were entirely prepared for the Downs diagnosis. With those odds, they just thought there was no question. Well, guess what! She just got the results back on Friday and the screening was wrong! Her baby does not have Downs!

I think you should continue thinking positively, because there is no reason not to!

I had the amnio after seeing a Downs marker on one baby, and they did both. But they could tell the difference between the two sacs, because they inject a die into the sac of one of them. I hope you're not worried about the amnio procedure, b/c it was totally fine. Expect to be on bedrest for a day or so after, though.

Keep us updated. Your in my thoughts.

I'm sending prayers your way...hope they get you in and get you some definitive answers soon!!

We just had our u/s and both babies have a single marker (different than yours, but similar type situation none-the-less) so I can empathize with what you are going through. Hang in there and try and stay positive. Everything I have been reading is that there are so many "false-positives" with these markers.

    Praying for healthy babies :hug99:

Hope it turns out to be a normal u/s fluke. I think most of the time when they do an amnio for one they wind up doing it for the other while they are at it...and I've heard the dye thing too. Sounds like you are staying calm... try to stay calm about it... don't dwell on the worst until you know for sure, it'll only add grey hairs to your head. Really hope your little one is just fine.

Keeping you all in my thoughts. I know from listening to others that the fact there are no more markers is a VERY good sign.

By the way....do you happen to be in St Cloud or was there a MOMS sale in the Cities?

I live it the St CLoud area....couldn't go to the sale this weekend because of bedrest though. :-(

Thanks for all your reassurances. It really helps to have the support of all of you.

Careyann22~ There was a MOM sale in Eagan. I didn't realize St. Cloud has a MOM group too. St. Cloud is not much closer to us, but a little easier to get to. I live in Montevideo in west central MN. Sorry to hear you are on bed rest, but healthy babies are more important than the sale. :) Good to hear from another Minnesotan.

You and your babies are in my thoughts and prayers, Beth ...

I can totally emphatize with what you're going through. I had an increased risk for Trisomy 18 too after my first-tri screening, and it's really terrifying news. I did an amnio (two -- one for each baby, but done at the same time) a few weeks later, and thankfully my results came back fine -- two healthy babies. Like others have said, there are LOTS of false positives with these screenings and ultrasounds, so try to take their "results" with a grain of salt. An amnio can give you definite results, and in my opinion it's worth the risk in this situation. They say the risk is actually MUCH lower than the numbers you hear (more like 1 in 1,000 not 1 in 300), so as long as you feel confident in your doctor, I'd do it if I were you.

The amnio itself wasn't bad -- just be prepared to relax for at least the rest of that day if not the whole following day as well (I was crampy for two days). And yes, my place inserted a dye into the first baby's sac so that they knew when they did the second one that if it came out blue that they did the same baby twice (whcih they didn't).

The hardest part is waiting, so try to be strong and not drive yourself crazy by reading too much info! You don't know right now whether anything is really wrong, so talking yourself into thinking that something IS is bad for both you and the babies. :hug99:

Got my peri appointment for 8:30 a.m. on Thurs. morning. :) I'm feeling so much better after hearing all your stories. I'm actually looking forward to the u/s with the peri because I hear their equipment is amazing. I'm thinking positive and that things will probably be o.k. and this is just another opportunity to see our little ones.

I would definitely listen more closely to the peri than the u/s sound tech at your ob-gyn office. It's likely you'll get a Level II u/s which has some amazing things they measure. My AFP scores were out of whack, so we had to meet with a genetic counselor who talked to us about the whole Trisomy/Spina Bifida risks. We were soooo scared. We actually waited on our decision for an amnio until after we had the u/s completed. Everything looked normal so we opted to forego the amnio.

    Good luck to you. ;)

We had the same thing from a blood test result, and did the Level II u/s and the amnio. It wasn't that bad, and we have 2 healthy babies. Here's hoping that you have the same results! :love0028:

One thing about the amnio and the blue dye - they forgot to tell me that the blue dye comes out soon after the amnio in your waste, so if you do have the amnio, and then your urine turns green for a short time - don't freak out like I did. Good luck!

Well, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that we have two healthy babies. We're not telling people IRL, but I'll tell my internet friends that they are girls!. I said we should name Baby A Strawberry Shortcake since her strawberry shaped head is what caused all the worry in the first place.

The bad news: The feelings I've been having the last week are not baby movement. They're contractions. My cervix is funneling and I've been admitted to the hospital for monitoring and medication. :( The medication has been helping the contractions and they'll do an u/s tomorrow morning to see if it is helping my cervix. I'm really hopeful we can get this under control.

Thanks for all the positive thoughts. I'll keep you posted.
