Hey ladies, just wanted to share some info that I got today at Staples.. I went to try to have my 4D and 2D ultrasounds laminated and the clerk said no cause it is not a good idea.. She said the 2D (black and white) are thermal and would basicaly turn to a black blob. The 4D ultrasounds were printed out onto glossy photo paper, she said it is never a good idea to laminate anything glossy and that any fingerprints or smudges would stay on them after they were laminated..

Just thought this was some good info to share with others who are trying to preserve theirs too!

Thank you so much for posting this! I was thinking about getting mine laminated. Guess that won't work. Any other ideas for how to preserve those U/S pics?

I actually heard that from my friend too!!

I was told that the U/S are done basically on the same type of paper electronic receipts are printed on and anywhere from a year to two the ink will "melt" off the paper. I asked my U/S tech about it and she agreed. She said her only recommendation is to scan the images into your computer she said it is the only way to preserve them unless you take them to a frame shop and pay alot of money to have them frame in air tight frames. (ick! <_< )

I was told that some 4D are printed on the same type of paper as the regular ultrasounds other are not and get the pretty "photo" type of paper, I was told scan them all in - if you have the ability since fading and smudging (especially if they get wet) can ruin the image.

    Hope this helps.

I have photocopied all my u/s pictures because I know the thermal paper will fade. (like movie tickets) They come up pretty good. My 4d pics came on normal matte photo paper so I think they will last.

I scanned mine into the computer. I have a decent scanner and they look great. I also was able to edit out my social security number which was printed on the ultrasound (eek!)

DH scanned ours into the computer and we have them saved onto a hard drive. This way we can print them out and email them at any time.

You can do a 'cold' laminate...sort of like contact paper that will preserve them. They sell sheet of self-laminate (or cold) at Walmart.

We also scanned them (and laminated the copies!)

I agree... the thermal process is what kills them. I've scanned all of mine, can email or print them again and again! They'd go nicely in my digital scrapbook.

However, clear mak-tak is the best for self - laminating. You can buy this stuff at staples for sure. I know a lot of dollar stores sell the rolls as well. This sounds like the suggestion from KCMichigan too.
