Ultrasound at 29 weeks?

Hi all--Got a question for you experienced moms. I read the last posting about missing a twin with a T/V u/s. I had one at 9 wk - only one babe. My midwife seemed to think though that it was easy to miss a twin with a T/V u/s because the "view" is coming from only one spot and so that limits it's capabilities to see all over the uterus.

I have progressively been measuring very large for my dates (at 26.5 wk I measure 35 now) and the midwife says that while she doesn't "feel" 2 babes in there, she says my uterus is NOT empty (huh?)

Anyway, I am now scheduled for an u/s tomorrow at 29 wk. The lady on the phone was telling me though that sometimes it's very hard at this stage to see twins and my dh's nurse-sister verified this!

Have you found this to be true? That it's hard to capture an image of 2 in there this late or hard to determine multipe legs and arms becasue of all the movement, etc.?

I think that any tech that knows a bit about what he/she is doing will find twins at 29 weeks, if they are there! I found out at 21. I know of one person on the forum that didn't find out until she was 27 weeks. Good luck to you! Let us know what you find out!

Since finding out I was pregnant with twins at 20 weeks I have had 7 ultrasounds. I have NEVER had any trouble seeing both twins. I honestly don't know how they could miss a twin at this stage. I guess it may be possible, but with how much they move around the belly and just look at the babies, I would be shocked if I had an ultrasond at 29 weeks, only saw one baby and then gave birth to twins. Also, by 29 weeks I could feel both heads or a head and a butt, depending on their position.

I guess if I were you, I'd be VERY confident in there only being one baby if only one baby shows up on the ultrasound.

I don't feel two babies, I really mostly don't even feel one!!!! :D I feel lots of hard knots everywhere and then areas where I don't feel anything hard. Are you on the thinner side cause I'm more on the chunky side (which m/w says could artifically account for the larger uterus, but not for 8 weeks extra growth)

I agree with Becky. BTW-I'm the one that didn't find out until 27 weeks. The techs never had any trouble finding both babies and determining what body part went with what baby.

When I got pregnant with my twins I was about 25 pounds overweight, so I'm definitely not on the thin side. I haven't gained much weight though (like 23 pounds). Let us know how the ultrasound goes. Some people just don't feel their babies as much as I do.....I have acrobats and soccer players.

I agree that I think it would be pretty hard to not see twins at 29 weeks. For one thing there isn't much room and I would think things would be getting cramped in there. But I guess stranger things have happened, but it seems like if there are two you should be able to see two.

Ronda Jo ---why did you have an u/s so late to determine twins? Did you have one any earlier?

The office that I went to doesn't do routine U/S. They just do them if they can't determine a due date or if there seems to be problems. I knew right when I got pregnant so there was no debate about that. My midwife never measured how big I was so she didn't know that I was measuring ahead (at 28 weeks I was measuring between 35-40). I had *felt* like I was having twins all along. At a college in a town about an hour away they were doing free u/s to teach their students how to read them. So, I decided it would be nice to get a picture of my baby(ies) before they were born. I went and it confirmed what I had thought all along. It was one of the happiest days of my life.

What a great story!!! I love it!!!! Tell me, why did you think you were having twins?

This website has been great. I have been on far too many that when girls ask these questions, the moms just say, "would you just go have an u/s already and be done with it?" but it's fun to talk about the possibilities before we find out for sure, isn't it?

I just felt different. I know every pregnancy is different, but my pregnancy with the twins was so so much different than with DS. I was sick 24/7 for the 1st 25 weeks (and then again from weeks 30 to the day I had them at 34 weeks 2 days). I did a HPT 5 days before I should have started my period and it was positive about 3 seconds after peeing on it. So, I knew my levels were VERY high. I kept having dreams that I was having twins. And, once I started showing I got HUGE fast. Everything together just made me *feel* like I was having twins. I knew the day I got pregnant with them that I was pregnant and that it was twins, even before taking a test. Just one of those *mother's intuition* things.

You are right, TS is WONDERFUL!
