Alrighty. I hope someone may enlighten me. My boys are now almost 4, but I swear at age two, they knew their colors. They may not have been able to say them, but they certainly could point to them. I'm starting to wonder if Annabella is color blind, or something! Maybe, also, we are not doing colors as often as we did with the boys, I don't know. If we put three items in front of her and ask her to find red/blue/yellow, she never does. And we repeat it. And still nothing. And I will ask what the color of my shirt is, or hers, or whatever else I can find in the room. And then if I ask her two seconds later to find the blue bowl, or what color my shirt is-she doesn't say what it is.

So, either my boys were ahead....she's behind...or she's colorblind. She knows all of their names-she can rattle off pink, purple, blue, green, red, yellow, and orange. But for the life of her, and me, can not say what is what.

    Is this normal?

Is she better with numbers/letters? Counting or singing the ABC's? I know my boys knew their colors and could say them and pick the correct one 98% of the time by 18 months. At 2.5 they are just now starting to sing their ABC's and count to maybe 10-11 if they are coaxed and helped along. My nephew learned opposite of my boys. And honestly at 2 I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep doing what you are doing:)

She can sing the ABC's and she can count up to 10, and then sometimes to 20-thanks to her older brothers! LOL! I will have to work with her a bit more!

You sound like my husband. Mine know the concept of colors but if you ask them what color is the dog? They will say "blue". They say "blue" to every color question. DH actually told me one day he was concerned because that's all Henry ever says so he thinks he is color blind, a condition that does not run in our family.

It is harder at this age for them to recall information (meaning answer a question from the top of their brain) than answer in other ways. Give her some time, it sounds like she understands color but has a hard time with recall. She sounds normal and will get there eventually.

My guys (who are definitely on their own timeline for these things) have only really started recalling colours in the last month or so. I think (hope!) it's normal! I know with M&A it has to be something that they're interested in or they just don't absorb it. So once they decided to work on colours they learned all the colours. But there are still days where they decide everything is yellow.

I have a LO who often decides everything is green. Colours are just not as interesting to her as to her brother. I did worry about colour-blindness with her for a while until it was checked at their last well check-up. There we saw that she can see the different colours but just does not care about colours much.

My two-year-olds do know their colors. But... I was just reading an article a few months ago about a Stanford researcher who studies infant/toddler cognition, and specifically acquisition of colors. And he was saying that when they bring kids into the lab-- and this was 3 or 4 year olds-- most don't know their colors, even if parents think thy do. So, it sounds like your DD is normal. (And then the article was about various interesting reasons for this). Oh, here is the article: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=why-johnny-name-colors It was pretty interesting, and also had some tips to help kids out with learning color words.

I think it's rare for girls to be color blind - I just read something that says that girls will only be color blind if their father is. Probably they just aren't interested in colors right now!

Thanks for the link!! I am going to go check it out! :)

Thanks ladies for the reassurances. I think dd is just marching to the beat of her own drum! LOL!

I recently took Nate to be evaluated for speech (he's been stuttering) and they gave me some handouts on 3 and 4 year old learning milestones. Apparently knowing "primary colors" (I'm assuming red, yellow, and blue) is a 3-year milestone. :pardon: Learning other colors beyond these is a 4-year milestone. So it sounds like your boys were just ahead in this regard, and Annabella is a typical 2 year old when it comes to colors! :good:

This was K exactly until about a month ago! It was like she didn't have the time or care enough to actually see what color it was. It was just blue!

I recently read in the Ames and Ilg 3-year-old development book that color recognition comes in at very different times for kids, between 2 and 5, with some knowing one or two colors at 2 years of age and some boys not knowing primary colors even at 5.

Eleanor and Ethan were like this, they would just pick a colour and say that any time you asked (I honestly can't remember when the twins learned their colours any more). I thought that they must not really know them but then I noticed that if they choose to point out the colour of something they were getting it right 80-90% of the time (sometimes mixing up confusing colours like pink/purple or orange/yellow). It was just that they didn't want to 'perform' and answer the question! <_<
Now they know pretty much all the colours and will generally answer correctly, although they sometimes throw out the wrong colour as a joke and then laugh.

Like someone else said, my girls learned their colors well before they were able to count or say ABC's. At 2, they knew their colors.

I don't think I would be overly concerned either. We did have times when they would call everything just one color too.

My girls do not know their colors either, it just doesn't interest them.

They do have "assigned colors" though, purple cups, shoes, shirts etc for one, and pink for the other, and they definitely know whose stuff belongs to who, so it's more of a matter of just being able to know what you mean when prompted for color.

and mine don't count past 5, and I have never done the ABC's with them, so I definitely wouldn't worry.

Ugh! You're telling me! And as luck would have it....

We were on the trampoline this evening. She had a purple shirt-I asked her the color-and she said purple. Anthony had a red shirt-she got that as well. And I had my ipod cover, green, and she got that also.

She's been pulling my leg! :aggressive: Hahahaha!
