Hi all. Just a couple of questions for you all . . .

-I'm 35 weeks tomorrow and for the past few days I've had waves of nausea. Usually in the mornings and even during the night when I wake to pee or switch from our bed to the sofa (which occurs several times/night b/c I don't sleep well). I can't stand the feeling of being nauseous, just wondering if this is normal.

-Secondly . . . I'm wondering how accurate the babies estimated weight is during the U/S's compared to when they are born. That might not make sense. In other words, last week, the girls measured 5 lbs. 2 oz and 5 lbs. 6 oz. If I were to have gone into labor that night, I'm wondering how close to that estimate they would really be. I've heard stories of moms delivering babies that were a lot bigger than what they estimated in the womb (w/singletons), just wondering what some of your experiences have been.

    Thank you,
    Heather

I had my boys at 33 weeks and the night I went into labor I thought I ate a bad enchilada. It felt like nausea and heartburn all in one. I think I did throw up about a month before that but thought it was my prenatal vitamin.

The U/S size can vary a couple of pounds. My boys were almost 5 pounds according to the u/s 3 days before their birth. They turned out to be 3lbs 3oz and 3lbs 11oz. I have heard of them being bigger than estimated too. I guess the important word is estimate.

I also experienced a lot of nausea at the end of my twin pregnancy and even vomited several times during the last few weeks. I don't know if it is necessarily "normal," but I don't think it is anything to be concerned about. Nausea can sometimes be a sign that labor is imminent. My OB admitted me at my 36 week checkup in part b/c I was feeling so sick and had vomited that morning. She thought I might go into labor and didn't want to take any risks b/c we live over an hour away from the hospital. I did seem to be in labor that night, but was given Pitocin in the morning due to some other health concerns, so we don't know if it was true labor or not. Don't be afraid to ask for anti-nausea medication during labor if you're feeling terrible; it helped me a ton.

Generally they say that the weights estimated by u/s can be off by up to a pound in either direction, but obviously it can be more, as in mommymeg's experience. Mine were pretty accurate.

with my daughter I had a biophysical done at 33 weeks and it showed her to be over 8 lbs already. She ended up being born a week and a half later and only weighted 6'5.

I was sick throughout my whole pregnancy, but it did get worse at the end...I was throwing up again almost as bad as the first trimester, especially once I went into labor...all the way until I delivered! The weights for our twins were off by over a lb each...the u/s showed DS as the bigger baby, over 6 1/2 lbs...he was born 4 lbs 13 oz. DD ended up being slightly bigger (even though the whole time, even a week before they thought she was smaller), 5 lbs 1 oz. I was shocked when I heard the real weights b/c I had come off of terbutaline and bedrest at 36 weeks b/c the dr thought they were big enough...so for them to be over a lb smaller than we thought, I wished I had stayed on it another week! They were healthy enough to come right home with us, though, so no complaints here! GL!

I was one of those mommas. They told me the week before I had my girls that they were a little over 3 lbs, as a matter of fact they were very concerned. However, they weighed almost 6 lbs. a piece. My OB told us to prepare for little babies while they were prepping me, but when she pulled out Sarah she said, "wow, she's big". Yours are really nice sized babies, by the way. Congrats on making it this far!!

I'm concern about their weight too. During last sat's appt with the doc, both weigh 2.2lbs, at week 28. I thought that's pretty small? They have another 10 weeks to cook, I wonder if they'll actually make the mark. Doc's not too concerned about it, but wonder if she's just being too laid back?

I think more often twins' weight are overestimated ... it's harder to measure and they tend to think they're bigger, possibly schedule c/s or inductions earlier because of it.

I was afraid of that too, mine always measured 2-3 weeks ahead, which seemed like a lot, but it was consistent (and I had the same sonographer the entire time, except my 20w one which was done in the hospital). My oldest was large, so in that sense it could be right.

Well, they turned out to be correct. They measured 2lbs11oz (both) at 26 weeks, 4lbs5oz and 4lbs6oz at 30 weeks, 6lbs1oz and lower 6lbs range (they 6lbs15oz but said that something probably went wrong with the belly measurement and said count on lower 6lbs range). They were born at 38w2d, 7lbs11oz and 7lbs10oz, so yes, very correct. Still 1 oz apart, but again, I think it's very hard to make measurements and after reading a lot of stories, mine seem to be extremely accurate.

On the morning of delivery, I had an u/s to check the babies' positions and was told both were around 5 lbs (4.14 and 5.3). When I delivered that afternoon at 36 weeks, they were both 5lbs 14oz. So mine were off by almost a pound so they can be inaccurate but I think it's mainly to give a ball park idea.

My last US was exactly one week before they were born. That ultrasound said they were both weighing 5lb 13 oz. They came out a week later weighing 5lb 1oz & 5lb 3oz.

It seems like the US's tend to err on the side of measuring large?

Oh gosh, if they do over-estimate their weight, doesn't that mean my twins are measuring lesser than what I thought its considered low birth weight??

It's just an estimate and the estimate can be larger or smaller than the babies' actual weight...for me, they estimated about a pound smaller for some people the estimate is larger.

Remember too that the babies do a lot of growing/gaining after 30/32 weeks so try not to worry. I know you will, but really try not too...

Plus the average baby's weight at 28 weeks is around 2 1/2 lbs so you're just about on point with that!

    Try to relax!

I had an u/s at 33w+ about a week before the twins delivered. They estimated A at 4.8 and B at 4.7. Their actual weights one week later were: A at 4.14 and B at 4.4. So they probably had A right, but B was overestimated.

I hope the nausea lets up. I was lucky that when it stopped about 21 weeks, it never came back.

Best of luck for a smooth delivery!

Nothing to worry about from my experience. I had an u/s 28wks and they were 2.4 and 1.13. I was sent to a larger hosp to see a specialist due to weight differences. At 30 wks they were 2.14 & 2.6, they said there's nothing to worry about, they're just 2 different people with their own weights, and gaining steadily. I don't think it's small, remember, they really pack on the pounds in the end. I have another u/s next week (34 wks) I'll let you know how big they are, maybe that will help ease your worry.

I didn't have any nausea at the end ... I made it to 37 weeks and was DONE, so I ate some fresh pineapple at night and the next morning, my water broke!

As for the weights, right before birth, they thought they weighed a little over 5 pounds ... Connor was 5-5 and Chase was 6-8. The entire pregnancy they were within an ounce or two of each other so when they were born, Chase's weight was a big surprise.

    UPDATE

    I have my 34wk u/s today.
    Baby A ~ 4.5#
    Baby B ~ 3.1#
My doc says it's a cause for concern so she's sending me back up to a bigger hospital with better machines... so who knows. I just pray that all is okay.

My babies were round about a half pound lighter than predicted via ultrasound. They also said that B was the bigger baby and A ended up being bigger. They were 6.3 and 5.13 though. We were told both were closer to 7lbs.
