Two naps or move to one

I am trying to figure out if it is time to switch to one nap. They are 16 months, and have done all nap transitions later than most (they have only been on two naps for about tow and a half motnhs). So i don't want to push if they are not ready for it.I am wondering about this because how long they nap on any given day changes. They have been switching to long morning naps and short afternoon naps for a week and then they switch back to short morning and long afternoon. They have also been doing random night wakings for months now. I am wondering if the napping has anything to do with it. I am just grasping for answers.

    When did you switch?
How did you know it was time?
How did you make the transition....gradual or just do it?
What time do they go down and how long do they sleep?
Did you have to adjust their bed time?

Sorry for all the questions. I know this topic is on here over and over again, so TIA for any help.

1.I made the switch between 15-16 months
2.I knew it was time when they both were consistently boycotting their morning nap.
3.I did not do a gradual transition, I started with moving their afternoon nap up an hour and that seemed to work out well.
4.Mine go down 1 pm to almost 4pm
5.At first I did have to adjust their bed time because initially the nap was lasting an hour or so, so they went to bed early...once the nap time started extending, we went back to the regular bedtime.

    1) I made the switch at 13 months
    2) I didn't have a choice, my older kids were in baseball and their games were at 5:15. Since the twins second nap was usually at 5pm, they were going to miss it 3-4 days a week. So I chose to switch them to one nap a day earlier than normal.
    3) I just did it.
    4) Mine go down about 2-2:30 and sleep for 1.5 hrs. 2 hrs on a good day (rare). But mine go to bed late (9-9:30) and sleep late (9:30-10) so our nap time is a little later than most.
    5) Like Nancy, at first I moved their bedtime up earlier because they were only napping about 45 mins. Once their nap started extending (took about 2 weeks or so), then I moved their bedtime accordingly.

    1. We switched early, right around their first birthday.

    2. They had been 10 and 2 nappers but started to play until 11 or 11:30 before they fell asleep. Then they wouldn't be tired for their afternoon nap until later, which in turn made bedtime much too late for my liking.

    3. We just went for it.

    4. They go down between 11:30 and 12:30 depending on how early they got up that morning and sleep 2-3 hours.

    5. Their bedtime had gotten later prior to the switch, so when we switched it reverted back to between 7 and 7:30.

    Good luck!

We still have 2 naps a day, I find (w the daycare kids and their transitions) that when they start fighting the 2nd nap it's time. I usually start to wean them off of the first nap, just give them 30 min in the am and then they have a good nap in the pm.

When did you switch? at about 16 months

How did you know it was time? They started boycotting the afternoon nap, making that nap later and later. Sometimes they wouldn't take the afternoon nap at all.

How did you make the transition....gradual or just do it?
It was somewhat gradual. There was a month or so where some days they would take 2 naps, other days only 1.

What time do they go down and how long do they sleep?
They nap from approximately 12-2. Their bedtime is about 7:30 and they wake up around 7 a.m. or so.

Did you have to adjust their bed time?
If the one nap is short (1.5 hrs or less, they will usually go to bed earlier, closer to 7 p.m.)

Thanks ladies. I still don't think we are quite ready to go to one nap.....and right now that is fine with me since I am 6 months pregnant.....they are not fighting either nap. It is just nice to know what to look for and how to handle it. I would be ok with twonaps a day until after this next baby is born. :)

We switched at 15mos. Riley was ready but Jonathan wasn't as much but I made the switch anyways.

I knew it was time as Riley wasn't settling down for the morning nap as he used too. Some days wouldn't sleep at all for the first nap.

I just cut out that morning nap, cold turkey. I kept them busy. We did this in April of this year so the weather was perfect for being outside so we were outside when that first nap would have occurred.

The boys now sleep from 12:30-3:45. They usually hang out in their crib till 4:15 or so. I will adjust their time if they get up later in the day. I also adjust their bedtimes too if they take a later nap. 90% of the time tho, bedtime is 7-7:30. Sometimes, they have been known to head to bed at 6:30pm.
