I just got back from my 27 week appt. and my twins are underweight. They are in the 30th percentile. The dr. told me that I will have another ultrasound in 3 weeks, if they are still underweight I will be referred to the high risk Dr. He did tell me if they go below the 10th percentile they will take them early. My weight gain has been good. Is there anything I can do to get these twins to gain some serious weight?

I am not very big to begin with. I am about 5'6" and weighed 125 at the start of the pregnancy. I have always been small, so I don't understand how I will be able to grow big babies. I measure 34 weeks right now.

    Thanks
    April

Did he tell you the weights? I'm sorry you are worried now. I don't think your pre-pregnancy weight has much, if any, to do with the babies weights (hugs)

Some suggestions- protein protein protein. You could drink Boost High Protein shakes. I've heard great things about them and I drank them alot in my first tri because I could barely hold any food in (sick) I would just increase your water and protein.

Yes. Their weights were 2lbs 3oz and 2lbs 2oz on the 23rd. They put on 1lb each from the last ultrasound. I was so excited they put on a lb each, but I guess that wasn't enough.

I think their weights are fine but, of course, I'm not a doctor. I looked up some cites that have average gestational weight for 27 weeks and your right on, if not a little on the higher side (I found an average weight for 27 weeks of 1.93 pounds). Also keep in mind that u/s estimations of weight are not an exact measurement.

I have the same problem, except my weight gain was pretty low. My doctor said to lay on my left side in bed to get them the best blood flow. I drank lots of Ensure(or Boost) and just cut my activity level to low. Both babies now are in the 50th% instead of the 20's. They are both still considered IUGR, but he says they are a good size now and not to worry. I measured pretty small and I am small too, but that didn't seem to be the problem. I went from a 10 pound weight gain at like 28 weeks to a 21 pound weight gain by 33 weeks becasue I quit being active. Upping my calories alone wasn't working, so he put me on partial bedrest. I had the same problem with my son being too tiny and IUGR and then I upped my calorie intake and for him it worked. I din't decrease my activities at all. He was an 8lb 2 oz whopper.

Also pray a lot!!! I think my babies have had lots of prayers that have grown them this big. Never underestimate the power of prayer. Prayers is what gave me my two little blessings in the first place.

That's weird that the DR said that. They weren't worried AT ALL about my twins which at 27 weeks on the dot were 2 lbs 2 oz and 2 lbs 8 oz.

Don't worry :) I'm sure they are fine!!

You know - at 28 weeks, mine were 2lb 3oz and 2lb. So, mine are small too. and, let me tell you, I am NOT a small person. I make small babies. I don't think it really has anything to do with how big you are - it has to do more with how big you were when you were born and those genes, and just everything else. Plenty of smaller people grow big babies and vice versa. I have also gained LOTS of weight. I am on bedrest and drink 3 high protein boost drinks a day. Of course, this is for TTTS, not necessarily growth stuff - but I am alwaysl mindful of my smaller one and try to eat enough protein and calories to support both. It seems to be going straight to my butt and legs, but whatever. I have no idea what Im measuring, my peri doesn't do fundal measurements, since we do u/s anyway.

Anyway, we have regular growth scans, and it's more important that they're growing on their own growth curve, meaning they grow X number of days in X number of days. And, I'm not sure if they'll say IUGR unless it's below 5th percentile, but maybe it is 10th. So, the trend in growth is more important - and your weights seem fine to me - better than mine!

    hth,
    jenny

I don't think they are that small at all. You sound right on with the average.

Mine were 2 lbs 10oz and 2 lba 13oz at 29.1 weeks....so I would think that mine were about the same size as yours around 27 weeks...my Doc said that they had a normal weight and that they go through growth spirts on their own at their own time. I have another weight scan Tuesday so we will see how big they are now. I wouldn't worry about it... I too was only about 115 at the start of pregnancy (and 5'5")....I have gained a lot of weight in the past 4 weeks I hit 50 lbs mark this past week...ahhh!!!

its liek the other ladies said ur weight has little to do with the babies. i just posted today another case of ignorance that i got from an outsider who wanted to tell me how small i am and that my babies cant have any weight on them! ive gained exactly 35 pounds and my babies are both over 6 right now and i dont see anything wrong with ur babies weight mine were around 2 pounders when i was 27 weeks too. my babies grew quickly over the past few weeks.i even lost weight and they still gained!

pray pray pray i do it everyday ill pray for u too. stress is what u dont need keep ur head up ur babies sound like they are doing great my doctors put the most stress on me throughout my pregnancy. it just that twins have SO MANY risk factors that they want to take every precaution in you have a full term healthy pregnancy so listen to ur body maybe u do need to sit the **** dawn and eat some junk food! i remember for a couple weeks i didnt want anything but junk candy cakes and caffeine so u know what i ate candy junk food and drank sodas! i always listened to my body. i even had a half a beer once to satisfy my craving! i wouldnt suggest that to anyone but thats what i did. i never drank alcohol, ate junk food or really drank sodas before i became pregnant. but since i have been pregnant i craved a ciggarette so i smoked one and i craved a coors light so i drank half of one i craved chocolate so i ate chocolate but never did i excess in anything i always had a little just to satisfy the craving. other than that i say the first 3 months of my pregnancy were spent vomitting and praying to just be able to keep anything down! and then after than it was 90 percent of the time all i could eat was fruits and lettuce and i was more thirsty than anything! dr pepper settled my nausea by helping me burp and at night i craved milk so i had to eat about 2 bowls of cereal to get through the night!

basically im telling u this to let u know to listen to ur body but dont drink and smoke :) its not good for the babies no no no!!

I think the weights sound fine. My DS was born at 27w and weighed 2 lbs. 7 oz. and we were told he was a good size for being so early. :) But if you want to try and put on more weight protein is good.
