my friend is just found out she is pregnant with twins - with an IUD!!!
i am trying to convince her to see my doctor since she is a peri and they have a multiples clinic. she is resisting the idea since her other children were all delivered by a midwife and she thinks if she goes to a high risk doc then she will end up with a c/s. also she refuses to admit she is high risk. i tried to find a midwife who would deliver my girls with no luck. the best i could get was a group practice with midwives and doctor. in the end i ended up with a mat fet med group practice with a multiples clinic and really had a great experience - and did not have a c/s. anyone use a midwife?? how was your experience?

I would think that no matter how many babies you are pregnant with if you have an IUD in THAT is high risk!
I know of twins being born at home with a midwife...I guess it's a decision that she has to make...I hope you can convince her to go to your Dr. though!
    Good luck.

My midwive could not deliver me. Her malpractice insurance would not cover her for a multiple pregnancy. I found a great compromise as my OB did her residency in a birthing center staffed by midwives. Your friend's midwife should be able to recommend an OB who does not insist on c-sections with all twins.

Most midwives work with an MD anyway so if she needed a c/s the doctor would still do it. I think if she is having frats then it may be a little more reasonable to go with the midwife but has her midwife even said she would take her? I can't blame her though because my first daughter was born with a midwife and it was a wonderful experience. With twins I myself would definately go with a doc.

I think delivering with a midwife is a great idea. They believe in the natural birth process and usually don't interfere unless indicated. I ended up with a vaginal and csection delivery due to the physician interfering in the birth process. He was also one of the most veteran and well experienced doctors with twins in the hospital. Having a midwife can possibly avoid unnecessary interventions. Just my two cents.

I doubt she's going to be able to find a MW that will deliver her. Here in the UK, it's national health insurance and it's ALL midwives. You only get to see an OB/GYN twice during your pregnancy unless you're super high risk, and even here, MW's don't deliver twins AT ALL. They handle alot of your more generalized pre-natal care, but you see an OB every two weeks, and the MW is nowhere NEAR you when it's time to deliver. Also, here if you're delivering twins you're required to have an epidural so that it's already in place in case there's complications. Given all that, and being American, and knowing how litigious the US is, I'll be reallllly shocked if she if she finds a midwife that carries adequate malpractice ins. to deliver twins or any that would go along with it.

I live in New Mexico, one of the most progressive states in terms of midwives, and I wasn't able to have a midwife attended birth. I started my pregnancy with a certified nurse midwife who works on her own, not affiliated with a doctor. She was awesome and I was so sad to have to bring an OB and peri into the mix, but ultimately that's what my midwife recommended. I had a complication-free pregnancy, so there was no true medical need, just the midwife code of ethics according to my midwife. Also, my midwife's insurance wouldn't cover her for twin births. That said, all of the hospitals around here have midwives who work under the supervision of doctors and I think I could have chosen a midwife for my prenatal care. At the birth, I would have had the midwife there and the on-duty doctor as needed.

Interesting posts. I know of a midwife group that WILL deliver twins. They work for an OB in a hospital. I believe the midwife is there to help deliver as the OB is "standing on the sidelines". He's there if needed.

There are also midwives who do deliver at home. It's the woman's right to choose her birth-place.

I couldn't find a midwife either. She should do what makes her feel most comfortable. If she wants a midwife, and can get one, more power to her.
