Hello all. My name is Julie and I am 25 (soon to be 26) with a 13 month old daughter and we just found out we are expecting twins. My dates are off and nobody has confirmed a due date yet but it looks like mid/late May. The u/s tech did a transvaginal u/s on Friday and the first thing we both saw was two gestational sacs. My questions to everyone are, when were you first told it was twins, were your twins different sizes in the beginning and should my doctor be calling me back regarding the u/s findings or is it fine for him to wait until my next appointment to discuss this? One sac was significantly smaller (or at least in the picture I received) and I don't recall seeing the yolk...honestly though I kind of blanked out when I realized the potential of having three babies under two years old. Any help would be appreciated. I am just concerned about what I saw on the u/s and the problems/stress early u/s of twins creates. Thanks so much!

    Hi, and welcome!

We found out we were having twins when I was about 9 weeks pregnant. Baby B has always been about 3-4days smaller then his brother, and has been consistently smaller on every U/S we have had. I have had 4 so far, and I am having another on thursday. I didnt see my doc until I was almost 12 weeks pregnant, at which time we discussed the fact that it was twins. When do you see your doctor next?

I also have a toddler at home, Donevan is going to be 2 in Nov, I am due in Dec, but chances are will have them earlier.

Good luck and let us know how your appointment goes

    Congrats!

I found at out at 6w4d. They both measured 6w1d and both had a h/b at that time (117bpm and 130 bpm). They always measured the same, or about the same.

I think 5 weeks is still very early to really tell the exact size, measurement, etc. so good luck at your next appointment, I am sure you'll find out more then!

My next appointment is October 21st. I should be about 9-10 weeks then. I had some bleeding in the first trimester with my daughter and three doctors told me that I most likely had a blighted ovum but then they finally detected a heartbeat at almost 8 weeks. So I am not super concerned that one sac appears to be empty in my picture especially since they think I am only 5 weeks.

:welcome: to TS. I found out at 6 weeks due to some heavy bleeding that we were having twins. I think 5 weeks is still pretty early for size and such. I am sure you will find out more at your next appt. Congrats!!

I found out at 6 weeks and in that u/s pic, one sac looks smooshed compared to the other and it's just the angle of the shot. I have had a comlication free pregnancy and I'm almost 20 weeks now. :) I am thinking that it culd just be the angle the shot was taken at. When they are that little it's easy for them to look different.

I am right there with you on the shock factor. HH9!

You really can't tell anything from those u/s pics. The tech should have measured them (though he/she may not have told you the numbers -- sometimes they aren't supposed to give the patient any information  ) and your doc will let you know if anything is off. But depending on the angle, it can look very different in the pictures.

I had a transvaginal u/s at 5 weeks 6days and that is when they confirmed we were having twins. There were 2 sacs, one smaller then the other. In one sac, we could see the yolk sac and in the other, we could not. The doctor said when they do another u/s in another week we should see more and we did. We saw two heartbeats (i was 6weeks 6days)!!...and both my fertility dr and Peri confirmed that in with identical twins, one is always bigger then the other. It was sooo stressful waiting another week to confirm if they would see something in the other sac or not, but it was worth the wait!! Good Luck!!

Welcome to Twinstuff Julie! :welcome: Congrats on your twins. 5 weeks is still pretty early, so I would not be too worried yet about the sizes of the sacs. I know it's hard not to worry though.

Thanks so much for all of the replies. It makes me feel better to know a lot of people had similar stories. I wish they would do another u/s soon but it looks like I have to wait about 4 weeks. =/

Hello!! I had a u/s at 5w6d. There were 2 sacs. Baby A was measuring 5w6d and had a hb. the second sac was measuring 5w4d and was empty. I'm going in on thursday at 7w6d to check for a second baby. I'm pretty confident two will be there :) I'll let you know when I get back.

I found out at 6w4d that we were having twins. I couldn't see two babies but the doctor did so I just trusted what he said, lol. I was kind of in a daze once he said twins. My babies measured a couple of days off from each other the whole pregnancy.

I found out I was having twins at 6 weeks 5 days. At that point we could clearly see 2 sacs each with a baby and a heartbeat. We found out while at our RE's office. I saw my regular OB for the first time at 8 weeks and he did another ultrasound. Honestly I had ONE appointment my entire pregnancy where I didn't have an unltrasound. In our early u/s pics one sac always looks smaller than the other. Partly because of the way they had to angle the probe to get both sacs in the pictures. One sac (my baby B) always measured a day or 2 behind baby A, but when they were born there were only 4oz. different in weight. I think it is still so early, there is no need to be super worried yet.

We saw 2 sacs at 5 weeks, but it was still early so the doctor had us come back again around 7 weeks to confirm 2 heartbeats etc. ours always measured within a few days of each other.
Now we are having a singleton so we will have 3 babies all within 21 months apart. Im sure that its manageable. Im super excited about this new baby and after the inital shock wears off I think you will be too :)

If you have questions about what you saw, and want clarification Id go ahead and call the doctors office. Thats what they are there for! Ask them your questions and let them take 5 minutes out of their day to get back to you. Congrats on the pregnancy!!!!

I am excited about the prospect of having twins I'm just a worrier and I always like to ask a thousand questions when I don't understand something or something is left unresolved. The doctors office said, "It's still too early to tell at 5 weeks, but Frank (the u/s tech) is usually pretty good at these things. Just wait until your next appointment and the doctor will go over the u/s with you and probably schedule you for another one." Blegh. That just doesn't seem like a good enough answer. Before we found out it was twins the doctor told me they wouldn't call me after the u/s unless there was a problem. While two babies is not a problem it is definitely not the norm.

Also, this doctors office doesn't have a u/s machine. You have to go to a different place that has there own scheduling, etc. I'd like to be seen by a doctor that had a u/s readily available in case something seemed off.

We found out at 6w3d with our fertility doc. Had a follow up at 12 weeks due to the high rate of vanishing twins to confirm there were still 2 there. At that point, we were followed like any other twin pregnancy.

Im a HUGE worrier as well and I always ask a million questions also. When they saw two sacs & only one yolk sac, I questioned both the tech, doctor and nurse at the fertility place to death. I needed reassurance that what they were seeing was normal since one was smaller then the other, so I completely understand...good luck and keep us posted!!!

Good luck!! We found out at 7 weeks. Now the twins are almost 4 weeks old and we have a 15.5 month old too and yes it's crazy and hectic but we are making it through the days and I can't believe the babies are already 4 weeks! You can do it, it can only make you stronger! Good luck!!

Welcome and congrats!!! We found out at 8 weeks, two sacs, two heartbeats, but only one yolk sac in baby b's sac. 5 weeks is still really early! I wouldn't worry. Mine have always looked about the same size, but they've never told me the numbers as to how they were measuring. they always just say "well it looks like youre right on with your due date. Good luck! i know waiting for an u/s is really hard! I'm almost 28 weeks now, and still going strong :)
