Twins are here!

Here is our birth story! (Double vaginal!)
We arrived at the hospital on 8/14/08 at 7:30am and the doctor promptly broke Nadia's water. The contractions started pretty soon after. They were mild and certainly manageble at first. Since we HAD to deliver in the OR (standard for all twins at our hospital) and there was already a section going on they wanted to wait on Pitocin until the room was clear. This would avoid "air traffic control issues" according to the nurses. LOL I wasn't worried since I had never had a labor last less than 12 hours even with Pitocin!

About 2 hours into contractions they started the Pitocin. I was only 5 cm. JJ and I were breathing and working through contractions that were getting pretty tough when the nurse stopped in to inform us that the "Epidural Guy" was on the floor and now would be a convenient time to get it going if I was interested. (Otherwise I might have to wait later.) I was feeling really proud of myself and wanted to tough it out longer. For whatever reason, JJ thought that was foolish and told me in no uncertain terms that I should get it NOW and if I didn't he "hoped it came back and bit me in the *** later". YES! HE REALLY DID SAY THAT!!! LMAO (although I was no where near laughing at the time...) I relented and the Doctor came in to administer the epidural. When I sat up to actually have him insert the needle in my back I had the most horrendous pains imaginable! JJ helped me breathe through each one and kept giving me "status updates" on how strong each one was and when it was going away.

After the epidural was done I was writhing in pain. I actually screamed at JJ for making me get one saying, "Before I had this damn thing I was doing fine! Now I feel like I'm dying!!! Why did you want me to do this??? I was doing well! This is your fault!"

JJ gave my mother an update and told her that we had just gotten the epidural and should be settling in. He told her to have lunch and come down afterwards. HA! My pain was so intense I could no longer stay calm at all. I was losing the battle quickly and had no hope of gaining any ground. The nurse came in and asked where the pain was. I pointed to my (very) lower abdomen and she said she wanted to check me. After only 5 hours of labor I was now 8 cm dilated and needed to be moved to the OR in a hurry! My Mom was no only not there yet but had been told to settle in at home and have lunch (she eats at 2 every day, this will be important later in the story).

JJ called Mom back and said, "Don't get in a car accident or anything but you are going to want to come down here NOW!" They wheeled me down to the OR and JJ dressed in his scrubs. (He was so cute!!!) Everything was moving very quickly now, so much so that I have a hard time remembering everything. The bed came apart, I was crying that my mother wasn't there yet and my legs went up. I was told to push and that's what I did. I pushed to the brink of conciousness. This is around when my Mom showed up and came running into the room declaring that she had gotten there in time. (I was apparently still crying about her not making it and how could JJ tell her to stay home etc.) After two or three pushes the Doctor told us that with one more we would have a baby. With some encouragement from my Mom and JJ, I pushed with all I had and out came Nadia's head. Hurt like a ******* too. I briefly passed out and then was told to push again. I did and she came into the world at exactly 2:00pm! Good thing Mom didn't have lunch!

The Doctor broke Aidan's water and attached a probe to his head. The room got eerily quiet. The 2 OBs started doing an ultrasound on my belly to see how Aidan was "presenting". JJ was with Nadia and my Mom was watching everything the doctors were doing like a lioness protecting her cubs. I was pretty much out of it at this point. I had labored for and delivered one baby already, I needed a rest. I heard the doctor mutter about the probe being defective and he removed it to exchange it for another one. This time he said, "I must be in cervix or something" and he took a look. Once he confirmed he was, in fact, in Aidan's head he became concerned. His face said it was a problem but his voice never betrayed him. He was calm and definitely cool as a cucumber. My Mom got right up next to my face and was talking to me. I was trying hard to listen to what was going on because I had read all the books, this wasn't quite right. I heard my doctor tell someone to "wrap up that baby and get it out of here." (talking about Nadia) Both OBs looked at me and one said, "On the count of three we need you to push harder than you have ever pushed in your life." They looked at eachother and then at me and yelled "THREE!" I muttered, "What happened to one and two?" But my Mom was screaming "PUSH!" JJ came back over sensing that something was going horribly wrong. One doctor was pushing down on the top of my belly and my doctor reached up in there and grabbed Aidan by the head. (Yes, it really IS as painful as you would think...) One pushed while the other pulled and in one fluid motion he was out. Not just head, they ripped him completely out at 2:10pm. His cord was wrapped so tightly around his neck 3 times that he had no blood flow to his brain. It was strung around his elbow which only pulled it tighter. His cord was wound in a way that made it impossible to unwrap so the doctor cut it right there. Aidan let out a small cough and was whisked away by the Pediatrician. I was no where near being able to understand anything that was happening at this point. My doctor was congratulating me, making light of the situation and telling mehow proud he was of me. My nurse was crying and my Mom was telling me what an awesome job I did. I got one stitch, which my doctor found amusing for some reason, I guess considering all I had just been through. JJ followed Aidan to the nursery where the twin's Ped continued to work on him. They gave him oxygen and watched him. The Ped came in to tell me that Aidan was fine, JJ was with him and I would be able to see him in about a half hour if all went well. I was wheeled back to my room where they brought Nadia to meet me for the first time right after. JJ and my Mom stayed with Aidan. I had my baby girl and I was in love. I hardly noticed the time go by.

About 30 minutes (give or take) later JJ came in the room carrying Aidan and said, "I want to introduce you to our son." and handed me my boy. Talk about love at first sight! KAPOW! It socked me so hard I couldn't breathe! JJ handed him to me and I was suddenly holding both of my babies at one time! It was short lived because he was dying to hold Nadia, whom he had dubbed his "Infanta" (Spanish Princess). We looked at eachother and were in love all over again. We exchanged sweet notions and expressed how amazed we were that we had so much trouble getting one that it was purely amazing to have TWO precious babies to love.

JJ bought me flowers and wrote on the card: "Thank you for our children. I love you forever, Jim" Isn't that the cutest thing you ever did hear??? Anyone who actually knows my husband knows how rare a sentiment like that is for him!

So now it's the four of us and we couldn't be happier. JJ helps with the feedings, diapering and burping. He is in love with these babies and takes every opportunity to pick them up. Big change from the man who fathered my first two! That Jim wouldn't do any of those things. He is loving it and I love him for that.

Another funny story. My Dad was at the hospital and looked at Aidan, who was sleeping peacfully, and declared, "He looks cold. Guess I will have to pick him up!"; and he did! LOL Aidan was not cold, there wasn't a damn thing wrong with that baby! Grandpa is funny like that!

So these babies are the most spoiled things on this Earth right now. Someone is always holding them, be it Katy who has become quite the little Mommy, Drake who gets nervous whenever they cry, Grandma or Grandpa who just love to hold them, Daddy who would give anything for them (his Nino and Infanta) or me, the feedbag. I actually get to hold them the least of everyone. I'll have my turn. For now I am loving everyone else loving on them. They deserve every bit of it for as hard as we worked to get them. I just want to love them up right.

For those of you wondering how my Basset Hound is handling all this... She thinks they are her puppies. She checks on them and lays right next to them. She doesn't let anyone other than family get near them and she licks their legs and feet when they cry until someone comes to fix whatever is ailing them at the time. She is PERFECT!

    Nadia weighed 6.3
    Aidan weighed 5.13
