So, I'm not even to the 6 week mark yet and our girls are still in the NICU and DH is already talking about our next child. Just wondering, does anyone know the likelyhood of having twins after twins? Our girls are spontaneous mono/di twins. No history of twins in the family and no fertility treatments.

Congrats on yoru beautiful girls forst of all. Actually I read on one fo the tabloid magazines where Angelina Jolie was supposedly pregnant with twins again (I doubt it) that if you conceive within your first year after twins there is a higher likelihood of havign them again. OF course it was a tabloid so who really knows??

Everything I have read says your chances double once you have twins. Now being that yours are spontaneous and there is no family history I **think** with no family history your chance of having twins is 2% so for you that would be a 4% chance. Someone please correct me if this is wrong.

I think I have always heard a 20% chance if your twins are fraternal and no fertility drugs were used. That is for another set of fraternals. So, you have 1 in 5 chances in having them again!

My good friend has "spontaneous" twin 2 year old boys. They decided to "try" a few months ago for a little girl. She is 16 weeks pregnant with her 2nd set of twins. So, I can vouch that it can happen.

Our doc told me I had a 86% chance of having twins again but I have a lot of factors( overweight, tall for a woman, heavy family history(6 of 11 of the girls generation are twins!)

All these numbers people are quoting are for fraternal twins, which is a whole different ballgame than identical. Fraternal twins occur because mom releases two eggs, which is something that is hereditary. But identical twins are just a chromosomal occurance and as far as I know they think it's totally random.

So my answer would be since your girls are ID, that you have the same chance as anyone else in a future pregnancy since we don't know of any predisposing factors for ID twins.

I remember reading that if you conceive fraternal twins and you have twins in both the mother and fathers families and are over the age of 30, the chance of conceiving twins again is astronomical, like 75%. Of course, I read that months ago because we have 5 sets on my side and 3 sets on his and didn't know it. Still, I found that on the internet so who knows, but there are some fascinating statistics out there if you look deeper into it. :)

My husband read the same 20% or 1 in 5 for fraternal twins..but again... that isn't anything to do with identical..

I belive that it would be the same 1 in 250 or 285 (whatever the statistic is) to have identical twins again...

DH laughs that i was that "1" now that it would figure that it would happen again, lol...

Well actually your chances for Frats after IDs also goes up. Simply because carrying twins can put stress on your body and raise your chances of hyperovulating after you have carried ANY kind of twins. But I am not sure of the percentage.

Now I am preggo with my 2nd set of Frats.... our chances of having twins again without any other factors being counted in was 1 in 5, 20%. BUT there are other things, which month you conceive, birthcontrol, if you get preggo while nursing, if you are overweight...etc.

I really don't know any statistics, but just wanted to add that I have a friend at church that has ID girls, then had a singleton, then had b/g twins.

    :rotflmbo: LOL :rotflmbo:

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my girls more than I could have ever imagined, but I cannot go through another pregnancy like this one. Four months of bedrest, two of them in the hospital just will not fly with twin toddlers at home. :umm:

so funny - this question comes up over and over again. partly because i think we are terrified to have twins again, and partly because we are terrified of NOT having twins again! the chances of having frats again is well known and studied, but its not clear when it comes to ID's - what we have. there seems to be a clear family history with some people but i think its just not well studied. i have read that your chanced of ID's goes up as you get older because the "shell" of the egg gets harder and more rigid and is more likely to split the embryo during hatching. this is also one of the reasons why the chance of ID's is higher with IVF if there is assisted hatching or ICSI. i believe there is a genetic trait that also leads to this phenomenon. but it still just doesn't make sense sometimes - like our friend who is an ID twin, and her dad and grandfather are ID twins. that is much more than a coincidence and seems to have to do with the sperm. who knows - but its intriguing.
