We have identical twin boys. Does anyone know what the chances are of having another set of twins? We always said we wanted 3 kiddos. It got me thinking what the odds are of having another set of twins.

    Curious in Canton :)

They say id twins are random, so your odds do not increase the next time you get prego (like with frats.) That being said I have met women online who have had two sets of id twins...so what does science really know??

like pp said id are supposedly random but we have 5 sets in 4 generations( out of 19 sets total). my high risk ob said i had a 86% chance of twins again with my factors(family frequency, height, weight and age{i dont plan on getting pregnant any time soon})

If they are identical, it would be extremely rare to have another set.

i've seen from a couple of different places that your chances of having a second set of ID twins is 1 in 70,000. your chances of having FR twins are the same as they've always been. this is something my DH & i talk about all the time since we're definitely going to be trying for a baby #3 at some point & our girls are ID too.

Like pp said, it's roughly 1:70,000. I've been pregnant twice since the twins and both were singletons. I was always a little nervous, though, because my sister has a set of frats the same age as my boys. But, these were the first sets born in our family as far as we know so we're both pretty much chopping it up to just a fluke coincidence.

I've heard chances for repeat ID twins are low... I have ID twin boys and have had a singleton girl and am currently pregnant with a singleton boy...

  8. I have two sets of twins. :D

At one point, I researched the odds of having 2 sets and wrote about it in my blog (come see the picture of my family with 2 sets of twins, too!): TwinParenthood.com/2009/09/15/two-sets-of-twins

When I learned I was pregnant the 2nd time, I didn't want to have 2 sets of twins, but of course now I wouldn't change a thing! My first set was the result of IVF treatment, so not surprising that we had twins (fraternal). But the 2nd set are identical.

From what I understand, fraternal twins can run in families. After having one set of fraternal twins, the odds of having twins again are higher than the odds of having twins for the general population (but are still not terribly high). However, identical twins don't run in families. So, if you had identicals the first time around, it is not likely that you'll have twins again.

Hope that puts your mind at ease! Or, maybe you want 2 sets of twins?
