Twin Pregnancy or Ectopic Pregnancy HELP!

    I was spotting and cramping a few weeks ago so I went to the ER where the doctor performed an ultrasound as well as a beta HCG count (blood work). He told me based on the ultrasound I was only a few days pregnant since he was unable to locate even a gestational sac (via vaginal ultrasound), but my HCG level was 499 (placing me at about 5wks). I'm confused. How can I be only a few days pregnant AND 5wks pregnant at the same time? Has anyone else had a similar experience? I'm also concerned with an ectopic pregnancy due to the conflicting ultrasound/beta HCG test results.
