twin boy names

Discussion in 'Pregnancy Help' started by rebeccagridley, Mar 10, 2007.

    Hi,
I am working on coming up with names for our boys due to be born late July/early August.
My husband and I like the names of Ryan and Matthew, but I realize that these names don't particularly 'match'. Does it matter that they match or not? I know with twins it's kinda fun to have their names be similar (starting with the same letter or ending with the same sound) but we're stumped on what else would go with either Ryan or Matthew. I thought of Matthew and Michael, but am not sure how much I like the name Michael. Sorry this is a trivial question, but any suggestions? Thanks!

I don't think twin names need to "match" unless you really want them that way. You could always find names that are similar in meaning. I know a family who has sons named Matthew and Ryan! If you want specific suggestions, what is your 'style' (unique, old fashioned, etc.)? How do you like the names to start or end? Out of pp's suggestions, I like (best):

    Ryan and Owen
    Ethan and Aiden
    Ryan and Aaron
    Matthew and Andrew

Example of Similar Meaning Names...these all mean gift, gift of God,etc.

Matthew, Dorian/Darien, Iain, Mateo, Sean, Zane, Darek (gifted ruler), John, Jonathan

I don't think twin names have to match, but it is cute! I really like Patricia's suggestion of Dylan and Ryan and TabbiSue's suggestion of Matthew and Andrew.

My twins names don't match at all.
I'm okay with mildly matchy names, not too matchy though like I wouldn't like Brian and Ryan. I think middle names are a great way to match up twin names. My Gabby's middle name is in Mixteco (my MIL's native language) and we had actually wanted to name them both Joy but one in English and one in Mixteco, but the Mixteco word for Joy was unpronouncible for me and DH!

    I like Matthew and Andrew
    or Ryan and Dylan
    as well.

I personally think it's far better for them to have non-matchy names.

Me too! I actually think that giving twins matching names is a bad idea. If they sound too much alike then it can get too confusing for them and you...and it is cool to make the names different and give the kids each names to fit thier own personalities! I have never liked matching twin names. For this reason, we just took the top 2 names on our boys' list and used those...William Lee and Isaiah Michael...which are actually family names (except for Isaiah...which we like b/c it is a strong Biblical name)...William is a 5th generation 1st name, Lee is a 4th generation middle name, and Michael is my DH's name (his middle name, which he goes by).

If we had had 2 girls, we would have used the top 2 names on our girls list...Megan Elizabeth and Kennedy Grace. For a boy and girl they would have been William and Megan.

    Melissa,
I think your twin's names are very similar (ending sound,etc...)!

Also,I don't thing one way is far better than the other, just whichever you like best (matching or non),if I ever had b/b twins I would probably use matching names(Ashton and Aiden or Ashton and Brighton) but if g/g probably not (Kendyll,Delaney,Paris,Astrid)....kwim?
