Twin A measuring over 1 lb lighter in the womb?

A little background on my twins- they are Di/Di... Different Sacs, Different Placentas. At the last U/S (2 weeks ago) The boys were exactly 3lbs. 14 oz each. (I know that these numbers are usually off but this is where we were measurement wise at 32 weeks).

I go in today and she measures and right away I see that A is measuring with a EDD of 12/14 (My EDD is 11/27). She seems concerned. She had me lay on my side and she did the measurements again and came up with the same. She laid me on my back again and the same measurements.
A is measuring a weight of 4lbs 5oz and B is measuring 5lbs 7oz. So she leaves to call the doctor but tells him, 'I'm pretty sure it's because B is laying right on top of A. I think it's a positional problem. ' So he says okay and I'll get measured again in 2 weeks via U/S.

Now I guess I'm trying not to get too worried because if she was worried- I'm guessing she would have said that, but in the back of my mind, I'm like, 'I'd really like to know for sure if there is a problem with A (He is breech). And why they want to wait for 2 weeks to have another US @ 36 weeks? Why not in a week to just ease minds. The U/S tech said they didn't like to do them too close together?

Has this happened to anyone or has anyone heard of this?

    Thanks!

I had a size ultrasound at about 30 weeks where there was almost a pound difference between the two. At the next u/s 4 weeks later, they were within an ounce of each other! Ultrasounds aren't perfect; if your doctor isn't too concerned, I would try not to worry about it.

Thanks! That eases my mind. Because they are di di, I don't worry about TTTS or anything, but I just wanted to make sure :)

Glad I could ease your mind! Mine are di/di as well, so I didn't worry about it too much, just put it up to imperfect ultrasounds. :)

This has come up so many times on this forum so that should give you comfort. It is clearly common. My twins are over 1lb apart and we've been to both an OB and specialist and neither one is concerned. Fraternal twins are genetically different and are not going to be the same weights. Not to mention, the estimates are more and more inaccurate the bigger you get. As long as they are growing, you are doing fine. The concern would be if one was not growing at the right rate...regardless of what the other one is doing.

I had almost the same experience. My baby A measured a pound smaller at our last u/s, but the tech had a hard time getting a good measurement for her because she was behind baby B. The tech tried several times. Our doctor has ordered nonstress tests every 4 days and those have been coming out fine. We have to wait 2 weeks for our next u/s because the doctor said that they can't see a significant difference in growth in less time than that. Our u/s tech said that the measurements can be off the bigger the babies get as well. She had a single baby that measured 10lbs on the u/s but was 8 when born.

Measurements can be up to a lb off so if your dr isn't worried I wouldn't be worried

If baby B is vertex and his head is down low, it is hard to get a full and acurate head measurement which is a huge factor in determining weights. I am pretty sure my last u/s was at 34 or 35 weeks and they had trouble getting both of their measurements because it was just so cramped in there. Also considering they are di/di there isn't as big of a concern. I'm also sure that they checked fluid levels and there weren't any concerns so I wouldn't worry. If the doctor wasn't concerned I wouldn't be especially if you trust your doctor. Congrats on making it this far and just hang in there a little while longer!

Like the other ladies said if your OB isn't concerned then try not to worry :hug99: My two consistantly had a 1 to 1.5lb difference while I was pregnant and my OB wasn't concerned as they were fraternal. At birth there ended up actually being a 2.5lb difference BUT both babies were healthy and no NICU time. We all left the hospital 3 days after I gave birth.

I've heard as well that the u/s are just estimates and can be off as much as one pound. Last time I had my u/s I asked the tech this and she confirmed that this is true.

Hard to not relax when we are faced with so many new things.
