First I want to say that I am not a big fan of using the TV for a babysitter BUT....throughout the day there are always a few moments here and there that it would be helpful.

So does anyone recommend anything that seems to be helpful and educational for young babies? My youngest child is 6 now so it has been a while and I am sure that there is some new stuff out there.

Mine loved Baby Einstein at that age and will still watch them today, so I think they are a pretty good investment.

Baby Signing Time is a favorite of my older girl. She didn't start watching until closer to a year though but I bet younger babies would like it too.

Anything with colors/movement and sound! :p

Seriously at their age anything with those things will catch their eyes for short periods of time.

I have 2 older kids so we stay on playhouse disney or noggin all the time. When I lay the babes on the floor they'll keep glancing at the tv while they are chewing on their toys!

My husband got us a Baby Signing Time DVD and the babies love it! They loved the songs and colors - we watched it at fussy time, and it stopped them from crying right away...

You could check your local library first - that is what I did to see if I would like the DVD or not, so we wouldn't purchase anything we wouldn't like!

I was afraid to let them watch tv because I had heard it was "bad" to let babies before 2 years of age watch tv...anyone else heard that?

I think this, like everything else in life, has to be taken with a grain of salt:) Moderation is my key.

If you plop your baby or child down in front of the tv all day long every day, yep, it can cause problems.

Using a half hour video or tv show to grab a shower for mommy, or make lunch or whatever, I don't see a problem with it.

My kids have all watched tv and my oldest is 7, is skin and bones (not overweight), and loves to play outside. He's also extremely smart, reading at a full grade level above where he should be. My almost 3 yr old dd is not overweight either and is already showing signs of being like her big bro, too smart for her own good!

It also depends on what they are watching. I give full credit to shows like blues clues for teaching my kids colors (with my help of course), and to mickey mouse club for teaching my 2.5 yr old how to count to 14 already. :)

You gotta do what's right for you of course! :D

Around 11 months I let them watch a few Noggin shows as they didn't care for Baby Einstein. I discovered when my husband deployed that they really enjoyed watching videos of him reading books. We did several of their favorites before he left and now we do it every time they really like a new book. They love watching Daddy and at least it's kind of a book! :)

Since they turned 18 months we pretty much have PBS on when we are home (which isn't very long). It has taught my kids a lot and they are now obsessed with letters. I agree with Danielle...everything in moderation.

Baby Einstein has saved me many days. They are watching it right now. I like to put it on before bed. It calms them down and helps during the witching hour. They can be whining and crying and the second it comes on, they stop. I think the music is soothing. I also agree with everything in moderation.

I think most things are fine in moderation. I wouldn't sit them in front of the TV for hours of course, but if you need to make dinner or get something done, it can be entertaining for them & help out with the stress level for Mommy!
