Tummy Time

Is this something you start right away or wait a month or two?

our ped said they could start as soon as their umbilical stumps fell off, so we started around day 10.

 

I started a.s.a.p. I think it was around 5-7 days old.

 

I'm going to recommend that you start as soon as you can b/c I didn't and they hated it! My boys were in the NICU for a month and they let them sleep on their tummies b/c they were hooked up to monitors. We avoided all tummy time the first month home and by the time they 3 months old we started doing time on the Boppy and they screamed.

 

I'm not sure exactly when we started tummy time, but I have a video of Alyssa doing it at 3 wks old. I think I gave them a few mins practice everyday after about 2 wks old. Then at 10 wks they rolled from tummy to back. It was so exciting

 

Mine started their tummy time in the NICU, but we continued it after they came home. Just as a warning, they most likely will not like it right away and may cry the entire time. So short 5-10 minutes stints are good. We also started tummy time when they were little on our chests. It's the same effect and it seems to lessen the hatred of the floor.

 

We started it right away. The boys never screamed and loved it. I got on the floor with them, talked with them to get them to lift their heads. It worked out great because now they can fully lift their heads and chest off the ground.

We started around 3 months old. DD hated it but DS was pretty good at it.
