Tummy Sleeping...when can you start?

My babies are 6 weeks old. We do tummy time and with this activity have discovered that they will fall asleep and stay asleep soundly for up to 3 hours, sometimes 3.5. Terrified of SIDS they are not left alone and I am constantly checking their breathing. On their backs they sleep for about an hour at the most then somebody needs a paci, has busted out of their swaddle, or just seems to need some attention.

My questions are how many of you moms let your 2-3 month olds sleep on their tummy at night? When can babies start sleeping on their tummies?

    TIA,
    Lindia

A good rule to go by is if they can roll over (about 4-5 months) they can sleep on their tummies.
Mine slept on their sides in a wedge until then and now one sleeps on his tummy and one on his back.
I'm scared to death of SIDS aswell so I didn't mess with it! :)

I did it only for naps (in my eyesight) until they were able to roll over and get there themselves, per our pedi. I know plenty of mom's that have let them, I personally wouldn't have slept at night if I put them down to sleep on their tummies.

I agree with a PP. When they can roll over back and fourth successfully.

Ya, mine only started sleeping on their tummies in the past week or so, otherwise, we always put them on their backs.

I beleive they say you should always continue to put them down on their backs. If they start rolling to their tummies, it's fine, but you should continue to put them down on their backs.

I didn't let them do it until they rolled over that way on their own. (Both of mine rolled front to back before they rolled back to front, so I wasn't worried that they couldn't get back on their backs.) Mine were late rollers (5-6 months -- they were sitting before they rolled), so they were plenty old enough.

It is a controversial subject and a lot of people say the only way they got any sleep was to let newborns sleep on their tummies. I didn't even worry about SIDS all that much, but this was a risk I wasn't willing to take.

Yep. that's what happens, I always put them on their backs but they now roll to their sides or tummies on their own.

Noah and Jake just started rolling over back and forth in the past few weeks. Since then, Noah has decided he likes to sleep on his tummy. I check on him throughout the night (still afraid of the SIDS thing) and Jake decided he prefers to sleep on his side.

Until now, I would never let them sleep on their bellies unsupervised. But it was just my preference :)

Our babies started sleeping on their tummies at 5 months when they could roll over both ways. There was no way to keep them on their backs at that point. The ped said not to let them sleep on their tummies until then b/c the risk of sids is higher in babies during that age.
