I went to the doctor on Friday and first off they told me they think its both girls. YAYY!! And then my doctor said that my babies have (or may have) Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. I have a really bad memory and I thought I remembered her saying I do have it but my husband assures me she is only sending me to a specialist bc she is concerned they may get it because they share the same placenta and "outer sac." Does anyone have any experience with this? I remember her saying that shes worried of "hogging" which usually starts around 18- 20 weeks. Can anyone clarify the meaning of all of this? Also, after doing research I'm under the impression that they are identical?? Is that true? Thanks in advance for all your help

Yes, if they have the same chorian (outer sac) and one placenta, they're identical. It's good you're getting sent to a specialist since mono/di (identical) twins need to be monitored more closely for TTTS.

Sounds like you're in good hands!

So do they have TTTS or is my dr just taking precautions to monitor it because they are mono/di? She said they haven't started hogging though.

Lorin, identical twins have the possiblity of TTTS, but it's extremely rare. Your OB is probably sending you to a perinatologist who can monitor you and ensure that if your twins are diagnosed with TTTS, you get the correct care. Your husband is probably right that the doctor said they could have TTTS, not that they do. The "hogging" that your OB mentioned is when one twin gets more nutrients and blood flow from the shared placenta and one gets less.

If the OB doesn't see any inequal share (hogging) than they do not have TTTS, she's just being safe by referring you to a specialist. Don't stress - this is very typical. Most of us on here with identical twins were followed by perinatologists just in case during our pregnancies too.

*Edited because I just saw your second post.

Sounds like your doctor is just taking precautions. My boys were mono/di and I had u/s at the peri's every other week (once I hit 18 weeks) to monitor for TTTS. It's a rather rare condition so I wouldn't worry about it too much, but it's definitley a good idea to be monitored closely. It sounds like they are being proactive in your care. Good luck (and congrats on girls!!)

What they said. It's still pretty early to know for sure that they have TTTS or not so most likely you're just getting sent to monitor the situation since they always monitor mono/di twins more closely. If your doctor said there is no "hogging" yet then you're fine.

Thank you so much for your responses. I just got off the phone with my dr's nurse and she said that I don't have it and they just want to monitor me. I feel so much better!!! I was panicing all weekend for no reason!
