Arghh! I was sure that the peanut had flipped, and today before my OB appt I was feeling my abdomen and thought, hmm, that feels like the head....sure enough, breech! So now I have a "tentative" c-section on Jan 11 -- I don't want a c-section!

Of course, two hours later, wiggle wiggle wiggle...hey, did you just flip over? And now I have to wait until my next appt on Jan. 4 to find out!!! Arghh! :headbang: :gah:

    Thanks for letting me vent.

I don't know your due date...but can you get the c/s scheduled for after 40 weeks to give him as long as possible to flip around. There are some exercises you can try to get him to flip around too. Google it and you should be able to find some. Soooo frustrating, but don't give up hope yet.

My OB wants to schedule the C/S at 39 weeks, which is Jan 11 -- she said she will consider vaginal breech birth if I go spontaneously, but wants to play it safe...

Have faith, I had TWINS flip post 36 wks. That was a painful experience, and luckily they were flipping into a favorable position. Your little one still has time to rotate.

I'm shocked that a doctor who wants a c/s at 39 weeks would even consider vaginal breech birth. Most doctors nowadays refuse to do breech births. In fact, most hospitals will not allow breech births. Doctors just aren't trained for it anymore. Perhaps she meant if all the cards were lined up...ie...you walk in at 10cm dilated and the baby just needs to be pulled out... ??? I hope that baby flips for you because the odds of going into labor prior to 39 weeks aren't all that great. Flip baby flip!!

I assume that if the baby were head down the c/s wouldn't need to be at 39 weeks?? That's a really early cut-off for vbac. I don't know how the breech situation changes the risks, but in a normal vbac scenario there is no good reason to make a cut off for spontaneous labor at 39 or 40 weeks. In fact, the only circumstances that would warrant a scheduled c/s would be the same circumstances that would warrant a c/s under non-vbac cases... mom's blood pressure...baby in distress...etc. When a doctor starts saying a vbac patient must go into labor by 39 or even 40 weeks what he/she is really saying is that they just don't want to do vbac labor at all. Most doctors will put a cut-off of 42 weeks for a normal non-vbac patient, so I could see this as a reasonable cut off for vbac patients. I could even see a doc getting nervous past 41 weeks and wanting to take some interventions. But prior to that, I think it's just baloney...the doc just doesn't want to do vbac unless the circumstances are beyond ideal. Only the most ideal patients will go into labor exactly timed to suit the doctor's comfort level. The rest of us match the stats. 50% of women go into labor after their due date. IF only doctors could get comfortable with that fact!

Anyway, perhaps there are other risks involved in breech which is why your doctor wants the 39 weeks. I don't know the stats on that. I think most doctors are afraid of breech births, and prefer not to allow any woman to start up labor with a breech position because of the chance a baby could get stuck. I think in this case your doctor would only consider a breech birth if she really had no choice...ie...if you came in at 10 cm with the baby practically falling out... In any case, I hope your little one cooperates and flips around. So frustrating when you can't do anything about it. My twin baby A went transverse at 35 weeks...at the last minute it seemed my chance for a vaginal delivery was gone. She was pretty much stuck cradled in my pelvis from there on out. But I think you have a better chance of your baby flipping since you just have one in there!!

I heard frozen peas at the top of your belly and nice music on the bottom!!! No, serious! I don't know if it works, but it's worth a shot! :) Good luck!

eta: Evan flipped at about 32 weeks. I had no clue that it had happened! I hope you are as lucky as I was!

Wow, thanks for the great summary. A couple of points to clarify -- this is NOT VBAC, my twins were pre-term vaginal and did not survive. And, the Ontario regulatory body (sorry, don't know what it's called) is supporting vaginal breech births (recent change) when all other risks are low, it's no longer automatically a c-section if you're already in labour. But you're right, she is being cautious to schedule a c/s before 40 weeks because she really wants a healthy baby and there is definitely some different risks with breech births. That being said, I was breech (39 years ago!) and I turned out fine  , thank you.

Gottcha. I assumed you were vbac because of the discussion of c/s versus vaginal... It also makes more sense that you are north of the border. Down here it's very difficult to get a breech birth. I think it's fantastic that you have that option up there... I was just surprised because I thought you were here, and it's such a hard thing to get down here. Hopefully the medical schools up there are also following through and giving their students training in breech births!! 39 years ago every doctor knew how to handle breech delivery as a standard option. Today, not so many doctors have the training and experience to do breech...which is why most of them won't. Medical schools down here aren't giving any training on it anymore...it's an automatic c/s. (Which I think is unreasonable, but then again I would want a doctor with experience in order to try it!!)

And I'm so sorry about your loss. I did not notice that in your ticker. I sincerely hope that you have a healthy and happy delivery no matter which way this little one decides to come!!

well it certainly will be less complicated if the little bean will flip! So flip baby flip! In the meantime however, the spinningbabies.com website is a good resource. I had my first DD vaginally (head down) but b/c of that successful delivery, my OB permitted me to try for a vaginal of my breech and transverse presenting twins and they were each born feet first. There are risks w/breech vaginal delivery as there are risks with all deliveries! Feel free to PM me if you want to chat more about it or would like resources, as I did so much studying up on breech births prior to delivery (was on bedrest so what else did I have to think about all day! :) that I am now considering a career shift to nursing in obstetrics! Anyway good luck mama!

I think my boys flipped around 36 weeks, so there's still time. Fingers crossed.

Have you tried a few good trips to the chiropractor?? really open your pelvis up and give that baby some room!

What a bummer that the little stinker hasn't flipped for you yet. I've also known people to try the chiropractor, and the spinning babies web site... and some doctors/midwives will try turning the baby, but I think this is something they would try along with an induction, which if you are vbac they probably wouldn't do.

Such a bummer that most places won't do breech birth anymore. Although, I did just speak to my midwife about it, and apparently our hospital is starting to allow them. But no other hospital in the area allows breech birth. My old hospital even suspended it's only midwife for delivering a surprise breech baby.. the baby was right there and the mom was on like her 7th child, the parents were begging the midwife to just deliver the child since it was clear that it was an uncomplicated frank breech... so she did. Everyone was healthy, but the hospital won't allow her to practice anymore because it was against policy to allow breech delivery.

Try not to lose hope, maybe the baby will turn for you.
