I went in to do a " routine c-section" to deliver baby Tristan... I checked in and got my spinal, everything was going well. Baby came out nice and healthy weighing in at 6 lbs and 5 oz, my biggest baby yet! I was put to sleep while they stitched me up, and my husband followed the baby out ( I've got this fear of baby switching.)
Right before doctors put me under I vaguely remember complaining that my nose was itchy or clogged or something... then that's it, I passed out. The next thing I know, I woke up in the recovery room to my family members all looking pasty white, teary eyed, and frightened. I noticed I had a tube down my throat and my IV was now on my right hand instead of my initial left hand... Of course my first reaction was baby, was he ok?! Thank goodness everything was fine with him. Then the doctor came and explained everything to me.
Apparently I had gone into anaphalectic shock and had a severe allergic reaction to one of the the medications. While I was under I started thrashing and fighting because my airways were closing and I could not breath! I was fighting so hard I ripped off my IV! Thankfully I was under and remember nothing. And thankfully my hubby had followed baby and did not witness any of this. The anesthisiologist was able to get the tube in without having to do a trachiotomy ( when they put a hole in your throat), although he said they had caught it right in the nick of time as he had a hard time getting the tube in already.
I had to be pumped full of steriods, anti allergy meds, you name it and stay in the ICU for 24 hours with a tube in my throat! I wasn't allowed to see baby because of course he couldn't come in to the ICU and I couldn't leave the ICU... it was the longest 24 hours of my life, and so uncomfortable with a tube down your throat while awake and conscouis! At one point I had a panic attack and was about to rip the tube out! The worst part was they were scared to give me any medication to sedate me due to my allergies, so I really just had to tough it out! The next day they took the tube out and I was on the road to recovery!
Despite the rough start, my milk has come in slowly and I am succesfully breastfeeding my little man.. He is an angel and despite everything I went through, I am so grateful to have my little man. Of course my family is looking for someone to blame, how could have this been prevented, who's fault is it... The doctors think it could be the morphine, which I had with the twins, and had no allergic reaction too, but apparently there is no skin test for morphine.. so I am going to do an extensive allergy testing once I'm healed... I never even realized I was such an allergic person!
I am now home with my family and grateful for another shot at life. I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful team of doctors, supportive family and the best hubby and children in the world! Recovery has been a little more difficult because my pain meds are more limited due to my allergies, but honestly I can not complain. I'm enjoying every moment with my baby Tristan and overall just grateful for another day with my family!

Wow. Congratulations. And Glad you are okay! My SIL had a bad reaction on her 3rd c/s as well. Only it was her heart. She had some severe heart reaction where her heart pounded really fast for like 48 hours after the c/s and really high bp. She wound up on the cardiac unit and couldn't see her baby at all while she was there. Her dh finally put up a big stink telling the doctors that her bp wasn't going to come down until she could see the baby! And they finally accomodated getting her perfectly healthy baby down a floor to see her!

    Congrats on your baby!!

I am glad it you are ok, how scary! I am also allergic to morphine and we did not know it until AFTER my C-section. I almost stopped breathing & dropped my BP dangerously low---but no swelling. I dont recall most of the 24 hours post delivery due to all the meds they gave me afterwards.

It does make it hard-- I cant have many many pain relievers now for various reasons and sometimes Tylonel does not work.

Hope they find some answers for you and you recover quickly and are home with your family soon!

I reacted to morphine but not severely...just had itching, BP dropped, started throwing up, and yeah, the first 24 hours I really don't remember. I don't know that I'm truly "allergic" to it, but I'm pretty sure we'll ask for NO morphine for next time.
