I posted yesterday asking about Mosquito Bite Allergies. Dylan was bit last night at around 530pm with in a min or 2 later his bite was red and nearly the size of a quarter. I but some hydrocortisone on it and it didnt look to be getting any worse.

This morning when the boys got up DH changed them and I called Dylan over to check on the bite. The bit was just normal size but then he turned his head and it looked like he had grown an egg on his head. From the area where he was it to the center of his head and starting to go down his nose was totall swollen. looked like he had been hit in the head.

I called the oncall dr and went right to urget care. about 45min into waiting at UC the oncall dr finally called back and said he probably has a sensitivity to the bites but have him lookes at to be sure its not infected.

We finally get called in to the room and about 30min the UC DR comes in and says we have been seeing ALOT of this lately and last year too. Kids as well as adults are reacting very badly to mosquito bites. Theres really nothing I can do about it though. She said cont. with bug spray on them and If i want I can use a sunscreen/bug repel on their face. They gave me a huge tube of cream and said it would take 24-48hrs for the swelling to go down.

Do you use anything on their face for mosquitos? if so what?

Aside from waiting for the swelling to go down is there anything i can do to help it along? IM going to try cool compress tonight after he goes to sleep (he wont sit still otherwise)

My dad said he read somwhere thats putting a penny on the area helps it go down too???

    thanks

Wow, I can't believe I just read that. Almost the same thing happened to our ds this week! His did not swell but got really red and the bite grew larger than a quarter and became infected. I took him to the DR. and she gave us some cream for it but reminded us to not hesitate to take him to the ER over the weekend if he got a fever or did not improve. Scary, huh?! Anyway, I guess I just wanted to say you are not alone.

Wow! My 3 yo has a reaction like that to mosquito bites. He hasn't had one on his face though. I really just try to keep them in during dawn and dusk when the mosquitos are at their worst. They do make a Bug and Sun lotion, maybe that would be worth a try? I have used the Off spray on faces, by spraying it on my hand and then rubbing it on their face, but not on a child under 2. I am not sure what would be the safest.

I bought this stuff called "bug be gone" from a site springrainbotanicals.com It is organic and safe on babies 4 months and older. I will be using it on their faces when we go to Maine. Luckly we don't have many bugs here in AZ. No water. Good luck

My nephew spent 4 days in hospital after being biten by a mosquito near his ear. He got a baterial infection and it was pretty serious, so take care.

You would have different brands of insect repellant than us but we have some that say they are safe for kids on the bottle. I used these on my kids when they were younger. I now use the full strength adult ones. There are also herbal repellant available.

I took one of my 2 year old twins to the Urgent Care last weekend for the same thing. She had a bite on her arm and within a couple of hours it had swelled up and was really red. A few weekends prior she got a bite on her cheek and it swelled up more than normal as well.... The Dr stated that most bites on the face swell more than on other parts of the body.

The UC Dr said that it was an infected mosquito bite and gave us antibiotics. She also said that from her history (I told her other bites had swelled up but not as much and not all the time) she seemed to have a more severe reaction to mosquito bites than the average person.

She suggested giving her Childrens Claritin daily through the summer. We have a ped appt tomorrow (2yr well check) and I'm going to run that by him and see what he says.

Regarding bug spray ~ I buy biteblocker... www.biteblocker.com, they have a wipe that you can use for their face, neck, hands.

It must be an epidemic! My Marissa got a mosquito bite on her outer thigh that swelled to the size of a 50 cent piece. Last night DH called her pedi & got some Omnicef, but waited to see how it looked this morning. It was no worse so we are just watching it. She inherited her mosquito bite sensitivity from dh's family - his brother gets huge welts if he gets bitten. We keep the girls inside (though Marissa was bitten while in the house) & spray citronella spray around the pool.

I gave my DS Benedryl when it happened to him. He is on allergy meds now which helps control his reactions. Our house is mosquito central. We can't open a door without 50 coming in.

The Dr' said they were really bad last year and this year too..

Dylans swelling is completly gone now and they are in the house for the night no later then 500pm unless they are in total sun. For some reason and I never head this before mosquitos dont bite in the sun?? So we tried yesteday and no bites.. Go Figure...

Kayla reacts like that too, but usually only at the beginning of the season. After her first one or two bites they seem to be normal mosquito bites - small and itchy. But her first couple are bad. They swell, get red and pretty hard. She says they are sore, too. I keep them as clean as I can using peroxide and neosporin and they usually go down in a few days. As far as bug repellent, we use good old Avon Skin So Soft. It keeps the bugs away pretty well, but our property borders on a farm. We're bound to get a few bites no matter what we do.

Wow - I'm so "glad" to see so many other kids have the same reaction. My 4yo gets huge welts from mosquito bites. The Dr said cortisone cream will help and Benadryl. She had one on her eye last week that swelled it shut for more than a day. That can't be normal?

We decided to use the bug repellent towels - at least that way I can control the application. Who would have thought.

I hear you. In the pics in this link:

    http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?&...13&offset=0

Amber apparently had one crawl in bed with her over night. When she woke up, they were little bites. When I picked her up from daycare that afternoon, this is what they looked like. She had about 5 of them. You can see in the one pic where she's eating her sandwich, she had a bit on top of her wrist right in the crease and you can see where the top of her hand is swollen. Her's weren't quite as bad as you described, but she STILL as little scars from them. That was awful looking. Doc told us Benadryl. Yes, it could make them sleepy, so I thought Claritin/Loratadine during the day. Found out no, the anti-histamine in Benadryl is best for things such as bites. Claritin is best for seasonal allergy type histamines. The Benadryl was the key to making her comfortable. She didnt' seem to be bothered after dosing her with it.

I have always had those kinds of reactions to mosquito bites, and unfortunately so does ds. He got bit last year and it was yellow and infected looking w/in 18hrs. It scared me to death. We flew to the drs office and she also told us that they see it quite often. Scary though...

I react this way to mosquitos too. I am really allergic to them so I try to avoid being bit if possible. My last bad one made my finger swell and it reacted like a spider bite it even bruised on the inside.

When ever Ty gets a bite I have to give him some benedryll and put anti itch creme on even on his head. I did even back when he was little. He got a really bed reaction that doctors ran tests to see if he had a blood clot because his shouler, back, arm and chest were all swelling up. I would talk to the dr first.
