I've been showing signs of early labor for almost a week now. On Monday, I was 3 cm dilated/50% effaced, so I thought the end was coming soon.

Last night, after several hours of consistent contractions that had started to get stronger and come about five minutes or so apart, we called the on-call dr. in the OB practice and she said to go to the hospital. So, we went and after we got there, the contractions subsided, and weren't doing anything to change my cervix further (it was at 3 cm on Monday and stayed that way last night).

The on-call doctor wanted to put me on some medicine to stop contractions for a week (the nurse never even told me what it was--I assume it was tertabuline?). My OB is very non-interventionist unless something is really necessary, and stopping contractions at this point (36.5 weeks) was never part of the plan. So I nicely told the nurse that we didn't want to do that. And then they wanted to give me an IV to keep me hydrated (I was plenty hydrated!), so we asked to go home instead and rest. I was proud of myself for refusing (nicely and with discussion) unnecessary interventions, I usually avoid conflict like the plague! So, after the nurse talked to the doctor again, they decided to send us home, at around 1:30 this morning. I couldn't sleep until 7 this morning because my uterus was so irritated from all the poking and prodding and monitoring and laying on my back on an uncomfy bed.

I don't know what difference this will make, but one of the nurses accidently pulled out my mucus plug with one of the cervix checks. She said it looked like it was coming on its own soon anyway. Will that speed things along, or does that make any difference at all??

I'm just exhausted and wanting to meet my babies. I don't want to be too negative, though. I'm really glad that I've made it this far, and that the babies are healthy and active. I just want to be done!!!!

Holy crap, I can't believe they wanted to give you terb at 36.5 weeks with twins!!!!

I'da slapped the needle right out of her hand!!!

Good for you for refusing it. What reason did they give you to try to stop labor when you're essentially full term?

Good for you for turning down the terb and iv! Maybe it was demerol they were going to give you, instead of terb, just to make you more comfortable. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Pulling out some mucus plug shouldn't have any significant effect but I hope it happens soon!

Wow - I can't believe they wanted to give you meds to stop contractions when you are this far along! Good for you for refusing. I would think after 36 weeks they would let you go into labor if your body was ready for it.

My doctor told me today that she'll induce me at 38 weeks if I don't go on my own at some time before then and I'm at least a week further out than you are.

    Good for you!!

Good job staying away from those unwanted interventions. I'm sorry the babies didn't make their appearance but it sounds like it could be soon for you!

Maybe by the time I type this your little ones are in the world :)

Hang in there, you're almost there! Try to give it another week; I know you're miserable, but if you're planning to breastfeed, it might be a lot easier if they're born after 37 weeks....

Thanks everyone for your support!! I am getting impatient, but I finally got a really good night's sleep last night and that helps me to keep things in perspective.

I don't know what it was. The nurse just came in with the shot and didn't tell me what medicine was in it, just said that she was going to give it to me to stop the contractions. Overall, the nurse was really nice that night, I just don't like it when things aren't explained to me, you know? Plus, demerol is a narcotic, right? I had a really funky reaction to morphine once, not an allergic reaction, I just freaked out and felt totally disoriented. So, even if was just demerol, I would want to know.

That's a great motivator, thanks. I definitely want to breastfeed!

I went in last night myself, for the second time in a week and a half, and they stopped mine, too. I hope that when I get to 36 they'll let me have them!!!!!!!
