Our doctor prescribed TriVitamins for the boys. We noticed that there are sufficient vitamins in the formula. Just wondering why they are on the TriVitamin and not just flouride alone. Anyone know or have any experience? If not i'll ask my Dr at next visit.

My Dr said they don't need them if they are on formula- they are to supplement breastfeeding. I pump and give formula about 50/50 and she still said the vitamins really aren't needed.

Every pedi is different but I would ask. Especially at 9 months there probably is a good reason. Could be very low iron (but I doubt that if they didn't call it out) or more likely vitamin D...you can be on formula and still have a deficiency, especially if you don't get out a lot in the sun. However, when you get an exact answer you may be able to troubleshoot via diet or change in surroundings a few minutes a day. This is a tricky time eating wise. I would definitely ask. We only gave it from 9 - 12 mos and it was a bit of a pain, but her iron was back up by 1 year. Because every baby is so different between milk intake, weights, food intake, it is hard to say and there is no answer the same for all babies. Good luck. :)

The vitamins themselves are not needed but sometimes the fluoride alone is hard to find. That may be why. Or, it could be because the fluoride drops don't taste as good. Or, the doc may just prescribe the same thing for breastfed and formula fed babies to make it easier on himself. I know I have prescribed the multivitamin just because the pharmacies are always out of the fluoride drops.

Ah, thanks. Those reasons actually make sense. And from what I read, between what is in the formula and then the drops, the amount of vitamins that the boys are getting is still within the reasonable daily amount. They're not overdosing.
