Travel forces big boy beds?

We are headed to Disney and our b/b twins will be 26 months. They are currently 20 months and doing well in cribs, no attempt to climb out. We ditched the pack n plays for travel because they do climb in and out of those. For our trip to disney they will have their own room in a rental house and we have several options - rent two cribs, put them on mattresses on the floor, get two of those travel blow up bed things from One Step Ahead, or use the twin beds in the house with rails.

So I have three questions for those of you with experience in the big boy bed transition...

1- Do we even try to do things differently at the vacation house or just stick with renting cribs (assuming there's no change at home between now and then)?

2- If we decide to transition them, what option should we use at the vacation house?

3- If we use any other option but rental cribs at the vacation house, then should we just transition to toddler beds at home first and if so, how far in advance? I was thinking we could go that route at the their 2nd b-day as a present... but it seems early, but I don't want to deal with big sleeping issues on vacation beyond the normal new place, new bed thing.

Any advice from you experienced mamas is appreciated :)

    Thanks ahead of time!

I would rent cribs at your rental place, since that is an option. Some people have made the bed transition around that age and lived to tell the tale, but I wouldn't let vacation force you to it if you didn't otherwise want to.

When we went on vacation (for the first time ever) when the girls were 23 months, one slept in a crib that came with the house and the other in our PNP. They did just fine, and stayed in their cribs at home for another year-plus.

If you decide not to rent cribs for some reason, I'd go for mattresses on the floor just while you're on vacation. Doing it then doesn't necessarily mean you have to transition permanently. But you would probably need to be prepared for some bedtime antics, maybe having to sit/lie with them until asleep even if you don't normally do that, and padding the area around the mattress in case they roll out during the night.

I did this with each girl once (for a 3-day weekend -- Sarah at 2 years and Amy at almost 3) while they were still in cribs. They slept fine once they were zonked, but I did have to sit with them until they were asleep, and then several times during the night I had to haul them back onto the mattress from wherever they had rolled to.

my girls will be 27 months when we go on vacation and I am just having them sleep in pack n plays. They are in no hurry to get out of their cribs and neither am I!

i would rent the cribs if possible for your trip! No need to rush it!

Based entirely on my own experience with my B/B twins and our vacations and our transition to twin beds . . .

I would rent the cribs, even if it cost extra. If you try the beds, or mattresses on the floor, chances are high that you will need to stay in the room until they fall asleep - even if they are really tired. The extra freedom seems to be too much to not explore once Mommy and Daddy leave the room!

Keep the cribs as long as you can, especially if they share a room!

This is about the time we moved the girls to toddler beds. Most likely they will be too tired to worry much about it
