Hi Ladies! My boys are obsessed with the trash cans (diaper and kitchen). They started by throwing toys into the diaper pail and then progressed to taking things out of the kitchen trash. I tried this latch but it came off (not strong enough adhesive). Here are the trash cans we have: Diaper Pail Kitchen Can

    Thanks for your help!

I keep mine behind the laundry room door....or before in our other house I kept it in the pantry. The doors have Child proof door handles on them.

I don't know that I have a real good answer. We use the diaper genie II, they can't seem to get into it. However, it looks like your diaper pail is pretty similiar. My other suggestion was going to be a trash can in the kitchen with a lid, but you have that too.

If they are really determined, they will figure out a way to get into it....especially if it is within sight and reach. I agree with Cindy, maybe the only option is to put it behind a closed door.

I have the same exact problem. My boys are almost the exact same age too=). We don't have a diaper pail, but almost the same trash can (ours has the metal lid). If the trash is anywhere near the top they start taking stuff out. They recently got the empty OJ carton out and were shaking their juice sippy cups over the top trying to pit some back in. While yes it was super cute-do tehy really have to keep taking stuff out!

We use THIS ONE on our trash can and it has worked great! We've had it on for a few months. Our trash is very similar to yours.

Maybe you could put it on the counter when the kids are up/home and only take it down when they are away or you have guests over?

I don't have any suggestions, but wanted to say all the people I know who work in the trash business are doing well financially. I mean there's always going to be some sort of trash to pick up. Who knows maybe this is their first, "I want to be a _____ when I grow!" LOL

Mine are obsessed with the trash cans too, it drives me nuts! We usually have to put them up on a counter or some high spot where they can't reach it.

We kept our kitchen trash can in the laundry room (behind a closed door) during that phase. After a few months, we were able to bring it back out again and they just ignored it. When they do try to poke through it (which they still occasionally do, even at 3 years) we remind them that trash is yucky and make them wash their hands -- that's a disincentive to touching the trash again. ;)

For all the smaller trash cans (office, bedroom, etc.), we had to move them up -- I still have one on my dresser in the bedroom. :D

Yes, the trash business is always picking up! My father and uncle own trash removal companies.

I had to put the little wastebaskets out of reach for a while, and wedged the diaper pail in between the dresser and the wall to where they couldn't reach it. I sort-of got them disinterested in the trash by getting them their own little trash can. I got a small step-on flip-top can that I knew they would love. That is their can to throw away non-yucky trash (napkins, tissues, etc). Anything yucky goes in the kitchen trash, which they are much better about just putting it in and not touching anything now.

I just got this for when they want to get into the oven!! I'm going to try it! If our pantry wasn't full of the step ladder and DH's assortment of lunch bags, I'd try there, but it's just so convenient where it is now (and is way too tall to put up).

Pam, your comment made me lol! We thought maybe a rock star, but I'm thinking about pushing for the disposal business. If only they weren't so darned scared of the trash truck noises!

Minette, if I washed their hands they would do it more! They LOVE to wash their hands. :) It's good to know it's just a phase!

Thanks ladies. You're the best (as always).

I just had a flashback! I totally forgot about the months our kitchen garbage can spent sitting on the kitchen counter. It drove my husband crazy. We seriously set our garbage can on the counter to keep the boys out of it. The GOOD news is it is only phase...I don't remember how long it lasted, but now we are trying to just get them to put their trash IN the garbage can :)
