Transition to one nap or nap strike?

So, I know we are getting to the age where they may be transitioning to one nap, but how did you know when it was that or they were just being stubborn and not taking a second (or first) nap?

Here's our situation: The girls *usually* will take an hour to an hour and a half nap in the morning, at about 2 1/2 to 3 hours after they wake up. This can be hit or miss in the last week. Then, in the afternoon, 3 hrs or so after they wake up from the morning nap, they either take an hour or so nap or lately, they have mostly been just playing. Sometimes one of them will sleep and the other will just talk, sometimes they are both up. This has been going on, intermittently for the last two weeks. Last week, they were sick, so they slept better.

I usually put them to bed between 6:30 and 7, although sometimes they don't fall asleep until closer to 7:30-8 (not crying, just talking). They usually get up around 7ish -- sometimes as late as 8, sometimes as early as 6.

I have read HSHHC and I think they are transitioning, but just wanted some other people's thoughts. I have one more Kindermusik class this week at 1145, and I think after that, I'll start moving their morning nap back and going for one nap - sound right?

I didn't transition till 18 mos. But that doesn't mean they aren't getting ready. You can play with the times first a little....you need to control the time on the first one and then you can save the 2nd one sometimes!! Good luck!!

Mine transitioned at daycare at one year. The boys' nap schedule was very similar to what you've posted and it was pushed back to after lunch (lunch at 11 and nap starting anywhere between 11:30 and noon for about 2 or 2.5 hours). It took them a few days but then they were used to it and I haven't had a nap battle since.

A&C transitioned at 16 months, but they were doing exactly what you are describing. If they're just partying during that afternoon nap I would switch them to one nap. YOu might have to move lunch up and start the nap early for the first few weeks and then gradually move it later. I'm hoping to switch Elizabeth over soon just to make it easier to get out of the house and not have the older kids cooped up inside so much. I just need her to get a break from her teething and sleep past 6 am so that she can stay up for 1 nap!

My girls have been doing the same thing for 2-3 weeks now and they will be 15 months next week. I hate the thought of losing the morning nap because that's when I get ready in peace. We'll probably be making the switch soon though.

I know - that is one of the downers that I'm worried about. I guess I'll just have to get up before them and get ready - lately, I've been using them as an alarm, sleeping until they wake up!

Today, they are partying through their morning nap it appears. Even though they looked tired, rubbing eyes, etc, it doesn't sound like sleep is coming.

Oh well - as soon as you get things working, things change!
