We are taking about an 8 hour road trip here in a few weeks and I was wanting to get some new toys for my older DS who is almost 3 to play with in the car. We have a DVD player which we will use, but I don't really want him to watch movies the entire time (which I think he would get bored with anyway.) I'm looking for things that are small and fairly inexpensive. Any ideas?

we are leaving on Sat for a 9 hour trip.

I made up little surprise "bags" out of paper lunch bags. I made 10 of them, 5 for each kid and thoughout the trip they will get one. I put in little books, stickers, finger puppets, snacks, little matchbox cars, "little people", etc. Each bag has something different (although they all have books since my kiddos love them.)

The $1 shelf at Target always seems to have good things to keep in the car. What about a magna doodle?

I often drive to my mums who is 1.5 hour drive and found the kids were getting very bored so i bought 'my little art desk' from the Early Learning Centre, its a bag that attaches to the back of the front seats and then folds down so it then ends up in their lap if you know what i mean...... it has a pad and pencil case with crayons and feltip pens but i took out the feltpens and put in coloured pencils and some colouring books, they both love them and keeps them occupied for the entire journey there and back!! I am from Englad by the way so not sure if you have an Early Learning Centre in the states.

I like the idea of a selection bag too.

We just got back from a 27 hour road trip. We had magna doodles, color wonders coloring book - where the markers only show up on that paper. car, stickers and a few new books. And then we played games like find something outside that is the color "yellow", or tell me when you see a blue truck. They actually did a lot better than I thought they would on such a long ride.

If you are near a Michaels, they have some great items for $1.00.

    -Stickers in rolls
-pages to color with a set of pens
    -small sized color books
-small notebooks (some even have a small pen)
-post it notes (mine love to draw pictures on these)
-small craft kits (stringing foam beads, decorate a notebook, etc)

We also have one of those zipper open back of the seat contraptions which has pockets to hold books, crayons and small items.

We took a trip from Oregon to Arizona a few months ago; MANY hours in the car! I had little baskets that I put their toys in & they ended up dumping out the toys and putting the baskets on their heads. :)

One thing I really wish I'd had was some kind of lap desk with a cup holder. I got really tired of having to pull over all the time to find dropped sippies!
