Parker and Sydney share a room and then have a shared playroom.
They will be 3 on March 21st and are still in cribs.
Know that the time is coming to switch to big kid beds.
Thinking of doing the switch when they turn 3.
The hubbys first thing was...lets get bunk beds. I had to convince him that bunk beds are not an option for this age. MEN!!
So the question is, do we get toddler beds or just go ahead and switch to twins?
I dont think they will be able to share a room if we decide on twins and I am not sure how that will go over.
    What do you think?
If we do toddler beds now then we could switch to bunk beds later on??

    I don't know.
How long do you think boys and girls should share a room???

How about a compromise? We just got the kids these bunk beds that can be separated into two twins. So, you can have two twin size beds for now and if they are still rooming together later, you can bunk them. We got them because of limited space, so we already have them bunked. But, I love knowing that, if we eventually separate them we won't need to get new beds because they come apart.

    Ooh! Good Question!

We are planning on making the switch after their 3rd b-day too. We are going to get twin size beds because to purchase another set of beds in 2-3 years is just not financially viable for us.

You could get twin beds that convert into bunk if bunking is something you really want to do.

I have b/g twins as well and I think they will share a room until our 3 child is three putting them at about 6. The girls will share and DS will have his own room.

As far as how long they should share I am not sure. I know people that don't have any other option just becuase there aren't enough rooms in their house to separate them. My half brother and sister shared a room all through high school for that very reason.

Good Luck with all of your decisions,
    Lindia

Skip the toddler beds. We went for captains beds(have drawers underneath) . The twins cousin has a really cool step 2 bed with storage space underneath. Mine got to long for toddler beds very quickly

If I had the room I would have went straight to twins. We got the girls their toddler beds last Christmas and they are already just about as long as they are. They are great for a quick transition, but just don't last long enough because they are so short. I have read some posts in the past where people have just put a twin mattress on the floor which may take up less space since there is not foot or head board to worry about and that may help to keep them in the same room.

I would skip the toddler beds too! We just made the transition (about a month ago) and since our cribs converted to toddler beds, that is the route we took. However, we are in the process of shopping for regular beds. We are having a heck of a time with DS sleeping and several people have recommended putting him in a regular bed. :unknw: I don't know if it will help, but I am willing to try anything at this point.

I think the other posters made a good point about the bunks that will make 2 twins. If they are going to keep sharing a room, that might be your best bet.

My boys share a room, and we just converted the cribs to toddler beds last week. So far so good. But had we not had convertible cribs, we would have bought twin bunks and used them as twins until they were old enough to bunk.

My boys turned 3 a month ago and they are still in their cribs. I didn't want to get real beds until they are nighttime potty trained (for the most part) and of course, I can't really do that until they are out of their cribs. I was just thinking of putting their crib mattresses on the floor and seeing how they handled that before I purchased beds. We stayed at my mom's last month without their cribs and they slept on mats on the floor and did pretty well. Just another thought to prolong the purchase of another set of beds!

We went straight to twin beds (bunk beds, un-bunked), but we didn't switch till they were just over 3. It went pretty smoothly, but it's a lot easier to reason with a 3yo than a 2yo. The problems we had were bedtime issues related to that age (endless callbacks, dawdling, etc.) and not so much to cribs vs. beds.

Yep, skip toddler beds but no bunk beds at that age! We have twin beds that will bunk if needed.

I would go straight to twin beds. IMO toddler beds are a waste of money. I have no idea about bunk beds, but would not use them at age 3. My twins are almost 4 and I still would not use them at this age. Mine switched to beds before 3, DD was 26 months when she climbed out of her crib and DS was 2y8m when we switched him. As far as how long g/b twins can share a room, I have no idea. I separated mine at 7 months and it has been great for us. Good luck with the beds.

I got the girls' toddler beds for super cheap off of craigslist. However if I didn't get that deal, we would have gone right to twin beds. Oh and mine are just a few weeks older than yours and we moved them to beds two months ago. The transition was seamless, so don't fear! They even nap in their beds no problem.

We switched to toddler beds at 2.5 and the switch went well. We like the toddler beds here and they still have alot of room to grow. We choose toddler beds because when my niece switched to a twin bed she had some major sleep issues after. Plus, we have b/g twins also, and we thought this would help keep them in the same room and buy us some more time, and then go out a buy some nice twin beds later. As for when to separate them, I'm just going to wait and see how things go as they grow up and take my cue from them! Good luck with whatever you decide!

Boys & girls can share a room forever unless you want/need to seperate them.

I would go to twins. Maybe a bunk bed set that can be seperated until they are old enough to stack?
