My twins are 2 1/2 and they are currently still in cribs. The thought of moving them out of there scares the living daylights out of me LOL but my DS is starting to climb out. He's only done it when his sister needs to go potty after bedtime and he'll climb out and come in the bathroom too BUT I'm sure my time is coming where he will climb out at his leisure. I'm kind of hoping since he CAN do it but doesn't do it when he should be sleeping maybe I'll luck out and he'll actually stay in bed. LOL Anyway - my husband is just itching to build something and he'd like to build them a bed with drawers and stuff which sounds fantastic. He was originally thinking of just making them toddler beds and using their crib mattress but then I got to wondering when they grow out of toddler beds. I don't want to spend a ton of money making these toddler beds if they're going to grow out of them in the next 6 months - 1 year. Know what I mean? What age is "normal" for moving to a twin size mattress?

At 2.5 I would definitely go with twin beds, especially if he is going to be spending all that time making them beds. My kids are in toddler beds, but that's only because their cribs converted to toddler beds. That's great that they've stayed in their cribs so long! Once my kids figured out how to climb out, they would not stay in their cribs.

We moved our girls to toddler beds at 2 1/2. At 4y4m we just moved them to big girl beds (one twin and one double). However if I hadn't gotten a great deal on the toddler beds from craigslist, we may have gone straight to regular beds.

We moved to twin beds 3 weeks short of 3... Their bed converted but frankly they were too high off the floor for me to be comfortable with it.

My girls have shared a queen size mattress since about 20 months. We did use toddler beds briefly, but only because their cribs converted. If they hadn't, we would have gone straight to the queen size.

I'm dealing w the same issue and mine just turned 2. One of them has started climbing out of his crib :( We have twin beds for them, I think I may just put a mattress on the floor for them for now and see how they do. I'm so scared at the thought of them having so much freedom :s

I was also afraid of moving mine out of cribs, but once they were climbing out I figured I better or they would eventually get hurt. The transition was way easier than I expected. They played one night, and then went to sleep like normal. I would go with twins beds at that age. Mine have toddler beds now, because their crib converted to those, but they insist on sleeping together and can't fit in the toddler bed, so they sleep in the floor. I am now considering just getting a full or queen bed and letting them share that for a while.

Naomi and Luke were in toddler beds until they were 5 1/2. They were fine in them (had enough room and were comfortable) even then, they just got old enough for bunk beds. So I think you could get a good few years of use out of toddler beds. Having said that if your husband is going to go to the time and effort of making the beds himself I'd go with twin size. That way they will be able to use (and hopefully appreciate) them for far longer.

We only used the toddler beds for about 6 months and if my cribs hadn't converted, we wouldn't have bothered. My kids just didn't seem comfortable in them. If your husband is going to make the bed (which is great) then I would just go to twin beds.

How special that your DH is building the bed! I say go for it! We just transitioned to beds and it wasn't as bad as I thought. At the same time we also finally moved them into the same room! The first few nights there was a lot of laughter and catching them out of bed. Oh and a few times I went in because of crying in the middle of the night to find one on the floor!
We are in toddler beds because it was cheaper and I didn't think that they would be able to get in and out of the twin beds easily. From what I can see is that it should last them at least a couple of more years as they go upto 60lbs.

My girlies are still in toddler beds at 5 1/2. But Sabrina's the size of a 3-4 year old. Sydney's just average for size and still fits. And I like that if one of them has an accident, I can just wipe down the mattress. Plus, they just don't take up so much room. When we go to twin beds, we'll have to do bunk beds.

kids started to climb out of cribs at 2 1/2 years old, to make it safer, we just took the front rail totally out so they had like daybeds. they never came out and nothing really changed to when the rail was in.
2 or 3 months later, we got 2 toddler beds free handed down from a friend so we just sold our cribs and switched to toddler beds. same here, no problems, I kinda liked the little bars that come with on the sides, at least in the beginning. no they are more in the way and boink on it.

kids are soon 3 1/2 years old, if they stretch themselves all the way out on the toddler bed, the feet are almost on bottom already. so I am not sure how much longer we'll wait for twin beds.

I sure liked the size of them toddler beds, a twin will be much bigger and higher, so we might just start with the mattresses on the floor. our twins have separate rooms so bunk bed is no option.

If it were me, I'd probably just go right to twin beds. My guys' cribs convert to twin beds only, not toddler beds, so this is what we're probably going to do this summer.

BTW, Nate just started trying to climb out of his crib.....okay I have to clarify......he's trying to get *out* of his crib so he can climb back *into* his crib at bedtime; he doesn't want me to put him in bed. (Yes, I have the most contrary child on the face of the earth. ;)) Anyway, I told him that climbing out of his crib was not safe, that he might hurt himself, and if he tried to do it I'd take away his stuffed Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. That stopped him in his tracks, and he laid right back down and complained until he fell asleep! You might try that for a bit to keep your DS in his crib until the new beds get made. :good:

Thanks for all the replies!! My DS just climbed out toward the end of his nap. I think we might be getting to "that" time. I don't want him to hurt himself. Their cribs do convert to toddler beds so I think we'll do that sooner than later and start building some cool twin size beds for them :)

We never used toddler beds, even though our cribs were convertible. We went straight from cribs to twin size beds (with rails). They had issues with actually staying in their beds for awhile but as far as the size it worked out well for us just to go straight to the twins.

My days in a crib are also numbered, I just saw this from ikea http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39827962, its a bed frame that converts from toddler to twin.

I am thinking of doing something like this, because I can keep the current room configuration, if I go straight to twin, I don't think I will have room for twin beds, I also would be able to use my crib mattresses and not need to invest in new twin matresses.
