toddler bed or twin bed?

Please tell me your experiences. Our kids are 28 months and we're thinking about making the transition to beds. Right now they are in their cribs, but we leave the rail down. They do not try to escape and never have. They like bedtime so getting them to go to bed is not really an issue. Having said that, what are the pros and cons of toddler beds? I almost feel like it will be a waste of money, but maybe they need that transition? I don't know. If we did do twin beds, we could just do the railing on the side. What has worked for you and why?

I have had our twins in toddler beds since they were 18 months. They have never had a problem. I bought 2 used ones from Craigslist. I have just started thinking about getting them big kid beds.

We had space issues, so we went with the toddler beds. Had space not been an issue, I probably would have went straight to twin beds. However, I must say that with toddler beds being so low to the ground, I never worried about them getting hurt if they fell out. Plus, it was easy for them to get in and out of. But, now at almost 5, we are buying twin beds (bunk beds actually) to replace the toddler beds.

We have toddler beds that convert to twin size. Maybe something like that?

My oldest went from a crib to a twin size bed no problem and the twins will be going from cribs to toddler beds this next week. The only reason we're doing toddler beds is because they twins are on the smaller side, the room is on the smaller side and it's cheaper for us to do toddler beds then it is to buy twin beds and twin mattresses.
And I'm SOOO jealous your little ones are staying nicely in their cribs! My little stinkers were jumping out at a young age, but thanks to crib tents we've been able to hold them in a bit longer

We went straight to twin beds with bedrails at 2 1/2. We tried no rails but there was too much falling out so we used the rails for a couple of months. With anything new, there was a learning curve with naps and bedtime as far as getting out and playing but I have to say honestly, it was a pretty easy transition! We took everything out of their room aside from some stuffed animals and a few board books.

We're going to switch to twin beds with bed rails sometime in the near future. The main reason is that we don't really like the way our cribs convert (very small rail), and we never bought real crib bedding anyway, so we don't really want to buy some just for a couple year... Plus our BIL gave us his kids' old twin beds so we really only had to buy bedding... but yes, we're going to have to buy bed rails and they probably cost as much as a toddler bed!

Toddler beds are so cute though!

Our cribs are convertibles-so toddler to FULL. What was I thinking? :faint:

So-my original plan, thinking they were twin size, was transition them around Christmas time-as they would get the mattresses as a gift. But, we don't have $800 for mattresses, so opted to go the toddler bed for now until next year and then we'll get them in the full size beds. They love them and we've had no issues. I think they love the new found freedom, although they don't abuse it lol, and they are low enough to the ground, and the rail that is there is just perfect for the size of the bed.

We have beds (from IKEA) that we eventually extend into twin beds. The girls really like them and they're sturdy.

We went straight to twin beds at 22 mo and never looked back. I wasn't going to buy toddler beds for a few months.

We have the cribs that converted to toddler beds and then full size beds. We are now in full size beds and they didn't stay in the toddler beds very long. They just seemed to not be comfortable in the toddler beds anymore. If our cribs didn't convert, I would not have purchased toddler beds, I would have just skipped that step.
