OH MY GOSH!! So we're at my parents house on Long Island right now and during our 10 minute trip to the beach yesterday I started to think "Why did I bother to put swim diapers and bathing suits on them if we aren't even going into the water?" The water is too chilly for them to completely dunk into and the day was in the 70's. I get Emma out of her car seat when we get there and she is SOAKED with pee!! I didn't realize these diapers don't absorb but then wanted to give myself a "duh" smack - of course they don't!! So I guess the purpose is to just catch poopies in the water? Sheesh! Lauren was wet too - thankfully I brought another cover up so they wore that while we were there.

Yep. Unfortunately, I figured that out when we stopped at McDonald's before a trip to the pool a month or so ago. They don't hold *anything*! A couple of friends have bought the reusable ones (you can find them online or at Babies R' Us) and they say they're fantastic.

I just laughed to myself because I did not know that! It would have been a matter of time before I figured that out the hard way! Thanks for sharing. How funny that the most obvious did not sink in!

Learned that one the hard way myself with my first one. They don't help much with the poop either, unless you notice right away. Just a little warning...

Yup, I learned the hard way too. For the beach I put regular diapers on them under their swim suits.

woah!!! didn't even think about that!!! I saw those reusable ones at babies r us and thought..ewww why would you use those..didn't think they are the same as the swimmies...so how do those reusable ones work exactly..do you basically scoop the poop out and then wash them?? not sure if I want to get into that..at least with the swimmies I would just throw them away if there was poop in there..Did someone say they use a regular diaper in the water under their swim suits? How would that work? They would have a HUGE water logged diaper..I'm confused..thanks for the heads up and answering these stupid questions I have..

Yes, with the reusable ones you scrape the poop and wash them. (I use a wipe to get most of the poo, then wash as usual in the washer.) Yes, If you used a regular diaper under their swimsuits it would be huge and waterlogged.... unless they weren't in the water and just running around in the sand.

I am ssoooo confused! If you put on swimmer diaper what does it do? keep water out. What about when DB pees? what happens?

What are they for then? I feel like a real dunce right now, but I just don't get it. I bought a pack in case I want to put the babies in my brother 2 ft pool. Will they pee in the water? Should the babies only go in a pool just for them( separate wading pools?)

Some one please, explain. Thanks in Advance.

I guess it's just to catch the pooh but it doesn't even do that well! Emma ended up with a poo stained suit yesterday afternoon. It does catch *some* pee, but not a whole heck of a lot, so they are for sure peeing in the pool!

Honestly, I think there is no real purpose for them except to "say" that they are wearing a diaper when you go to a public pool!! They certainly don't catch much!!

I never put them on them until we are ready to get into the water. I didn't know that though, I do now!

After realizing exactly how ineffective they are, I think my chicks are going NAKIE from now on! I will put them on if we're going to be around others or in a public place for the sake of saying they have a diaper on.

Wow, good to know about the reusable ones... we found out the hard way, too. No poops in the diaper, yet, though. I say, if its their own baby pool, might as well let them splash around au natural, in the buff the way God intended, and deal with poops like they were in the bath. At least baby pools are easier to wash! By the way, as a funny side note, I brought Hannah in today from a romp in the baby pool and took off the swim diaper I had her in (DH and I decided to stop waisting our money on the swimmy diapers, as we call them, just today)... just then, Sarah bolted with the diaper I was going to put on Hannah, so... I chase Sarah down, wrestle her for the diaper, and return to... low and behold... Hannah sitting on a fresh pile of poop on my carpet, playing happily. I wished I left the swimmy on, if only to "catch" the poop!

Thanks for sharing! We are planning on swimming while we're in Boston for 2 weeks. Now I don't know what we'll do. I don't want them peeing in my cousin's pool! :(

I would just use the swim diapers. I think that's what everyone does, just know that you can't put them on until you are ready to hop in and make sure you change them after. I guess it would be the same for potty trained toddlers. I would imagine they pee in the pools all the time! So just plop them into a swimmy and pretend like you don't even realize what's going on!

I'm about 40 min. outside of Boston by the way, so enjoy New England!!

We wear swim diapers to their swimming lessons, but they are a joke, IMO. My DS tends to have some pretty big and soft poos. If he poo'ed while in the pool, it would definitely leak out of that diaper. I think they are only good for those solid, Baby Ruth poos. ;)

We are going to get a little baby pool and my intention was to do naked babies. Nobody cares what they wear in my backyard!

I use the reusable kind (found them at Target for $5). Now, mine have never pooped in them but I can't imagine that the poop could escape given how snug the elastic at the legs and waist fits. They'd be a mess to clean up but at least the poop wouldn't be in the pool. I tried those Little Swimmers and they didn't fit worth a darn. As often as we go swimming, the reusables have really paid off (and I can throw them in the machine with their suits).

I didn't realize this whole thing until lately, either...have you ever noticed that one the package it says "swim pants"!!! So the manufactures aren't even claiming that it's a diaper!
