to cry or not to cry...

My six month old twins have been awake virtually every hour all night for several weeks and only napping 10 - 30 minutes at a time during the day. I know they need more sleep because they're so grumpy all the time. One of our girls would most likely sleep all night again if the other one wasn't waking her up. I've been resistant to CIO, but their doctor assured me they will be fine. We've tried no-cry methods (and are still working on that now), but it just doesn't seem to be making much difference. We're all dissolving into puddles of emotion and can take no more.

My first question is obvious... am I a mean mama to resort to this?

My second question is for those who tried CIO with their twins who have very different temperaments and sleep needs. What did you do?

I did CIO at 5/12 months and am so glad I did. My boys were waking to eat and it was out of habit.

My CIO story is the 2nd one in this thread. There are a few other CIO stories on the link I provided.

I dont think it is mean at all. I think it is giving them a gift of being able to self soothe on their own. When I did CIO, I will never forget how happy they were when they woke in the morning!

If your doctor has said it's okay to CIO and you are all miserable I'd give it a try.

You are not a mean mommy. We did it with DS but DD did not have the temperment for it. I've let Evan cry a bit at some naptimes. I hope you get some sleep soon!

I have to say that doing CIO is one of the best thing I ever did for me and the babies!! They were able to finally sleep and I was able to regain some sanity! It is very hard at first, and I really think the key to it being successful is to be consistent. If this is something you are going to do, stick with it. The first couple of days are the hardest, and not long after I started my girls would go down for bed and naps without a fuss. It was definitely worth it for me.

You have to do what you are comfortable with. Good Luck with your decision. I hope your LO's get some sleep soon!!

Well, you have to do what you feel most comfortable doing. For us, CIO worked wonders. And it only took us one night. It took me a long time to get comfortable with the idea, but I finally did.

The biggest thing with CIO is consistency.

Good luck! I hope you find a method so that you and the babies can get some rest!
