So sorry if TMI, but I wondered if an increase in cervical fluid/discharge is normal during a twin pg. in the second trimester. Over the past couple of days I have had this increase in what seems like watery fluid in my underwear. I did call the doctor on call and he said that it was probably just normal hormone increases (esp. since it's twins) or possibly an infection. I also have difficulty discerning whether it could be incontinence because of the babies do seem to be growing. My main concern was as slow leak of amniotic fluid, which the doctor said was very unlikely but he said even in worst case scenario that unfortunately there was nothing they could do other than monitor me at this point. I just had an ultrasound done last Monday (amount of amniotic fluid was good) and have another appointment scheduled for a week from Tuesday. He said I would be safe to wait until then to get it checked out. I'm just wondering if I'm starting to have an increase in hormones which is causing this since the babies are going through a growth spurt right now (almost 16 weeks). Any thoughts?? Thanks ladies!

I had the exact same fears as you during my second trimester. I felt like my panties were always damp, but it never smelled like urine to me so I worried that it was amniotic fluid. I got the same answer from my OB as you: that it was likely just normal increased discharge which is even more in a twin pg than a singleton, he said that if it was an infection that it would smell "off" or bad to me, and that if it was amniotic fluid that there wasn't much that they could/would do about a leak that slow and that it wouldn't really harm the babies anyhow and could likely resolve itself.

I assume that it was just increased discharge and for me it sort of fluctuates...some days I have more than others, but I just relaxed about it and I'm now 35 almost 36 weeks with totally healthy babies!

I don't feel like my discharge is any more, or less, than it was the 1st rei. I'm 17 weeks pg with my twins and a couple weeks ago, maybe even at the beginning of the 2nd tri, I noticed some fluid leaking out of me after I'd empty my bladder. I asked my midwife about it and she said that it could be urine. I'm drinking so much water, close to a gallon a day, that there really isn't much odor or color to my urine anymore. She said that since the uterus sits on top of the bladder when my bladder empties my uterus squishes and a little urine can get trapped in the urethra only to leak out after I get up and move around bit. She suggested I lift up on my uterus while I'm going to help make sure I'm able to empty my bladder before my giant uterus can squish my bladder and trap urine for later leakage.

Sorry, that may have been TMI but taking her advice helped a LOT.

I had a TON of discharge when I was pregnant. Everything was ok, I just had to wear a pantyliner everyday! Oh the joys of pregnancy!

Just wondering- when you say a lot.. do you mean watery or just in general? In the evenings I really feel like it could be incontinence because I am up using the bathroom literally every 1/2 hour and bladder never seems empty.. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth going in a week early or if, like he doc said, I'm okay to wait a week until my next appt... even if it's an infection. I just have such a hard time believing it could be a bacterial infection since there are no typical symptoms of an infection!!! I've also heard that these infections typically take care of themselves.. so who knows!!! Thanks!!!

Mine is awful, too. And I also have the 'extra pee' problems. :) I go to the bathroom, stand up and still feel urine squeezing out! It's just a gooey mess down there. I think we all wonder if it's an amniotic leak in the back of our minds but I also think a lot of discharge is just normal so I wouldn't stress about it. Just keep changing your pantyliner regularly and it won't feel so gross all the time.

I am the same way and I only have one baby in there this time, I think it's totally normal.

I'm 16 weeks, too, and am having a LOT of watery d/c. I think it's pretty early for us to worry about amniotic fluid yet. I think there's only a little bit of fluid in there at this point. But, it's waaaaaay more d/c than with my singleton pregnancy. Yum.

It was a lot of watery discharge. If I didn't wear a pantyliner, my underwear would be soaked in 4-5 hours (you know what it's like when you work out and sweat a ton and your underwear is just really wet and gross, that is what it was like for me). I always worried it was my amniotic fluid also, but it's just gross pregnancy stuff.

I also leaked out pee too, especially if I laughed, sneezed, etc. Fortunately here in the last month or two I have finally stopped doing that!!!!! [IMG] Again, the joys of pregnancy!!!!

I can't tell you how much better (not to mention more sane!) all of your replies made me feel. It seems like it's fairly common in many pregnancies, but from what I'm gathering it's much more amplified (as so many of the symptoms are) with twins... I can deal with the inconvenience and craziness of all of the symptoms, but it's just so hard to interpret what's normal and what's not!!! Thank you!!!!

I'm 15 weeks now and I too get a little worried in the back of my mind wondering if all my discharge is amniotic fluid. I don't have any signs of infection but constantly visit the bathroom and never seem to completely empty my bladder. I read that Leukkorea (bad spelling?) is what they call some of the thicker discharge which helps to keep infection away. I feel so blessed to be carrying twins but there sure is some unpleasant things to experience everyday. It sounds from everyone that the increased amount of discharge is part of the journey!

My guess is discharge and possibly even sweat. I got real sweaty down there with my twin pregnancy, of course, they were born in September so it was a lot hotter then than it is now.
