At what age did you feel like time outs actually became effective? I currently put mine in time out and they don't get that they are being punished. any tips?

I think I started around 18m but at that age it was not for punisment it was only to get them out of what ever situation was causing them to be upset and do whatever they did that was wrong. Now at 2 years old I think they understand they are there b/c they did something they are not supposed to do. But if they dont and its just wishful thinking on my part it is still getting them out of the situation and giving them a couple min to calm down.

    Maybe redirecting would work better?

    good luck!:)

I'd say between 18m and 20m. They totally got it by 22m

Around 2 it kicked in a little bit more! I still did it at their age Maggie, it's still taking them away from the "action" for a cool off and I think they are WAY more in tune to what's happening than I ever give them credit for!!

We just started in the last two weeks. We do a modified version where we just hold their arm so they can't go play. They HATE it and it works no matter where we are.

I can't say I've seen a marked improvement yet on the behaviors we are trying to modify. However, they definately get that the time out is ASSOCIATED with those behaviors. I think it is starting to dawn on them.
