I really have to start time out with Jacob for hitting and throwing things at his sister. But where? I think he most likely would get it if he is put in the pack n play where he would be confined. I am wanting him to get the idea right away and since he would be confined, he might get it ooner. Currently, I have been saying no firmly and removing him from the scene, usually putting him in one of the plastic chairs we have. But I haven' been making him stay. The other issue is my nanny. I need to teach her how I want her to deal with it, but I just didn't think we were "there' yet. Well, I think we are now. THe cons to the pack and play is that is where they sleep when we travel. I know too that soon enough he'll be able to climb out of it. I just want something for right now. Should i go for it?
    TIA

We used the pack-n-play for time outs up until they were over 2.5. I just couldn't get Ryan to stay in TO so that is what we used. We are just now recently at a point where they will stay anywhere I put them for TO.

That is where we put my son when he gets introuble. I don't see it as a big deal that he also sleeps in his pack n play when we travel. We don't travel much so I don't think he will really associate the two. I also give him a firm no, and then in he goes. With my girls we used their crib because we didn't have a pack n play and they never had a problem going down at night or for naps (unless they were over tired but that has nothing to do with being put in their for time out). Try it out and see how it works.

We used the pnp on occasion and I also set up 4 sides of our Superyard as a little time out area. We called them the "Naughty Pen". It didn't bother them when we went on trips on the slept in their pnps until just over 2 years old. Some people like to stay there and make the kid stay in the chair but that doesn't work sometimes when you have another kid to watch and you want to be consistent.

We originally used the PNP as our timeout location, too. However, my DD is a climber and this did not last long. Plus I wanted to use something that I would have access to regardless of where we were (i.e. if they misbehave in a restaurant or someone else's house we would not have the PNP with us). Thus we decided to have them face the wall. They place their hands on the wall (kind of like they're being frisked). It's been working for us. :)

It only worked a couple months for us... they learned how to climb out of it really quick!!

It's been working great for us for now but I can see them being able to climb out in a few months. Then I think I will do a chair facing the corner or a naughty towel in a corner. Not sure yet. Guess I'll have to just figure it out when we get there.

We've not used the PNP, but I just started using Jax's (18 months) booster chair for timeout. He doesn't use it anymore, and unlike the PNP...he can't get out. He really dislikes it, so it accomplishes the goal.

We use their cribs for time-outs. If they do something wrong, we tell them NO and then say "one more time and you're going in your crib." They HATE it. We only leave them in for 1 minute but they HATE it. So far it's working for DS; not for DD since she keeps doing the bad behavior over and over. I just don't think she gets it.
i LOVE the idea of facing the wall. Good one.

I did time out in the PNP or the crib, and it never interfered with sleep. They knew when they were in there for discipline and when it was time to sleep.

I used mine for a time out & it didn't seem to have an affect on future pnp experiences.
I did receive some really helpful advice from their ped at that age. Max was biting Eli a lot. She told me to say a firm "No bite" then immediately take Eli & myself out of the room, leaving Max alone. She said at that age being left alone would make more of an impact than time out would. I had success with that method. Of course you need to have a child proof area to leave the child, just make sure everyone else is out of sight. Return once the child starts reacting to being alone, which was usually immediately with us.

I had hesitations about doing time outs in cribs or feeding seats as I didn't want them to develop negative associations with either of those places.

We tried the PNP but they couldn't have cared less about getting 'put' in there.

We have started just 'holding their arm' so they can't run around and play. Now THAT got them where it counts. They HATE it. It's perfect. :p

Good to see you on the boards again.

i use 4 panels of the superyard to make a square, but it slides around and doesn't work great. i didn't use a pnp because that's what they nap in at daycare. i was worried about the travel issue, but we've never traveled so in hindsight that was pointless.
