Time change spin-off question: not REALLY an extra hour...

I noticed a lot of folks said they were looking forward to their kids sleeping in later with the time change. I just don't get how you think it will last for more than the first day or two.

Just because the first day is only 23-hours, means you'll probably get lucky and get an extra hour out of them....but, remember, that hour didn't really exist in the first place, so it's not like YOU got an extra hour of sleep, or THEY got an extra hour of sleep.

So, let's say day one your normal 6:30 wake up occurs at 7:30, nap 1-3, bed at 8:00. Well, tonight you're back to dealing with a 24-hour schedule, and an extra hour in the 'night', so aren't you back at square one?

For us pretty much what happens is the whole schedule shifts an hour. So wake up will be at 8 instead of 7, breakfast around 8:30 instead of 7:30, lunch around 12:30 instead of 11:30, nap around 1:30 instead of 12:30, up at 3:30 instead of 2:30, dinner at 6:30 instead of 7:30 and bedtime around 8:30 instead of 7:30. Does that make sense? After a few days, lunch/nap/dinner will move back a little bit so they are more at what was the normal time but bedtime will stay at around 8/8:30 so that wake up is a bit later. If the switch back to the earlier times for the parts of the day happen gradually, the new bedtime/wakeup time seem to stick. hth!

I'm with you Siri. The time change doesn't really seem to impact their schedule in the long run. I think the first few days it might give them impression that they are waking late. We don't modify our schedule at all. So 1pm is naptime and 8 pm is bedtime.

I'm not real sure I follow your question, but it's been a long day. :winking0009:

All I know is that after the last time change in the fall, I was never able to get their naps and lunchtime back to what they had been. All were permanently at an earlier time, so I'm looking forward to the "spring ahead".

I think it has a lot to do with their body rhythms, daylight and how we react to it, etc.

Actually, T&T seem to be heavily influenced by the seasonal changes and they start waking earlier as the sun comes up earlier (and ready for bed earlier as well). They did this last year too so it really doesn't surprise me that they're shifting but it's a pain in the neck when DH gets home at 6 and they're ready for pajama time. The clock moving just shifts his schedule so it works better with theirs. Personally, I'd be happy to move the clock 30 minutes and never bother with it again and just let their sleep/wake time be what it is.

LOL...I guess I had to put myself back into 'cynical balance' after my cheese ball post.

Phew...I feel much better now. ;)

Glad to have the "real you" back again. (JK!) :blbl:

FWIW, in answer to your actual question -- the time change never makes any lasting difference to our schedules either. Because they're at daycare, they're strictly on clock time, so it only has an effect for the first day or two, if that.
