DD got impetigo on her face about a week ago. She went to the doctors, we got a topical antibiotic to kill it and her face is back to normal.
Yesterday I noticed her poor little thumb (the one she sucks). It looks like shes got impetigo on it now too. Her thumb sucking wasnt a real issue for me before. I figured she would drop the habit on her own, when she was ready. But NOW....that shes got impetigo on it I need to do something to discourage it.
I need to apply the medicine, 2x a day for 5 days to get it to clear up. In the meantime I need to keep her from sucking it and keep the moisture off of it. Currently I have it wrapped in an ace bandage but she thinks shes disabled now LOL -.... Im trying to explain to her not to suck it, and that she has another one but Im not sure if its sinking in.

Wow I don't know. What did the pedi suggest? I can't imagine keeping Ana from sucking her thumb... I hope someone else has more helpful suggestions. The only thing I can think of is a glove, but I don't know how you'll get her to keep it on.

I can't even imagine trying to stop a thumbsucker. I did see something in One Step Ahead that you put on their thumb and it goes around their wrist. I'm not sure how it stays on, but it might be worth a shot.

Well I called and talked to the nurse today instead of taking her back to the doctor because Im about 99% sure thats what it is now on her finger. The ace bandage was one idea....another (although not the safest) is using safety pins to secure a glove to a long sleeve shirt. ugh. If her thumb doesnt clear up in a few days I will have to take her in and they will probably have to give me an oral antibiotic. Lord help us.

So sorry Macey is having a rough go this week. Will she substitue a pacifier for her wounded limb. When I was a child I was wounded and had to switch my thumb preference. I know kids will switch but it takes time, hopefully it will heal prior to that happening. Is she still trying to chew the ace bandage? try putting a taste she doesn't like on it like lemon juice. To help steer her from it? Good luck J.

I know this isn't a funny when you have deal with it for your kiddo. BUT... (potentially inappropriate story to follow) When I was a teenager, I babysat for a family who couldn't get one their kids to stop sucking his thumb so one week, he was wandering around with a kid-size baseball glove DUCT TAPED to his hand. Apparently though that wasn't enough because the next week I came, they had put a high-top sneaker on his hand and pulled the laces all the way tight so he couldn't get it off!
Heres hoping you don't have to resort to those kind of measures!
    Good luck!

Could you sew some strong velcro to a glove and a long-sleeve shirt? You'd have to wash it everyday but if it's only 5 days, that's not so bad.

So sorry to hear you are facing such a tough situation!!

Luckily shse been leaving the ace wrap on her hand! yay!
I make sure she has it on before naps/bedtime and take it off the rest of the time. I did re-intorduce the pacifier for the time being but she doesnt seem upset about it at all and her thumb is looking better everyday! :)
