let your babies take them in the cribs for naps/bedtime? Again, this question is more for older babies I guess. I don't know the exact name of these things we have, but they are thin fleece mini blankets that have either a duck or frog's head on them. Will hooked one off the shelf as I was putting him in his crib for his nap and actually laid down and was rubbing it while he sucked his thumb - NEVER have I seen this before! He usually bounces around when I put him in the crib. I did take it out of the crib when he wasn't looking, but it got me thinking about letting them have these in the cribs with them. I have always been pretty strict about the crib is for sleep, not toys/play, but he really seemed to like it.

    2 questions:

    1. Since there are no warning labels about suffocation on these things, I am assuming they are safe. Do you think they are safe to leave in the cribs?
    2. Could I be setting myself up for a bad habit down the road? We don't use pacifiers or anything to go to sleep or stay asleep, so I worry about something like this becoming a necessity.

I know I'm rambling...feeling chatty today. Am I overanalyzing the whole thing?

    Thanks!

I debated this for a while, but I started using them to hold their pacis in. I would move them away from their faces when they fell asleep. Now they don't use pacis but these instead! They hardly cry to go to sleep (always put them down awake) and know its sleep time when they get them. Before I go to bed, I make sure the blanket heads (ours are called ookies) are away from their faces. I do know others who won't keep them in the crib.

FWIW, I read a sleep tip to get a small flannel square and have the mom sleep with it one night. Then give it to the baby to sleep with for the smell. I think these things are the same type of idea.

There's a post up on the 1-4 forum today about how many things people let their kids take with them to bed. You may want to check that out.

We don't give the girls anything to sleep with because I suspect they'd be up all night playing. Right now they either chew on their sleep sacks or sit up and giggle, so I'm not brave enough to add animals or blankets into the mix.

But... I suspect those blanket animal things are safe.

That's funny you mentioned that because I found a bunch of these blankets in the guest room bed the other night...I forgot I was sleeping with them to get the mommy smell on them all those months ago when we brought the boys home. I guess they just got made up in the bed!

We have what we call snugglies. THey are made by baby GUnd and are a 12 in square with a frog and lamb head. Maybe the same as yours. My two won't sleep with out it. It is great and helps them sleep in the carseat or at someone else house. They hold it or suck on it. Why fight what works.

I call them loveys or woobies. Mine started sleeping with them when they were about 5 months old as a soothing item. They now sleep with a slightly larger one. I think if they are 12x12 inches or somewhere around there they are fairly safe (read that somewhere).

Mine will sleep without it but they much prefer to have it and rub on it as they fall asleep. I don't mind that it's a comfort item which may or may not be an issue as they get older.

We use those as loveys -- I started putting them in the girls' cribs when they were 6 months old. Like anything that is soft and/or floppy, they are a slight suffocation risk, but your babies are almost a year old, so I wouldn't worry about it.

It is really healthy (developmentally) for kids to have loveys that they can use for comfort and soothing. IMO, it's not the same thing as taking toys to bed. In fact, our loveys stay in the crib at all times -- they only use them for naps and nighttime, unless they are sick.

We don't have those particular things you mention, but the girls do sleep with a small teddy bear and a blankie each. They steal the bears and blankies back and forth between the slats but they do also cuddle with them. They stay in the cribs at all times so they are only for nap and bed. I don't remember when I let them first have them, but I think it was like 9 or 10 months.

Both of mine sleep with theirs. We just call them thier bears b/c they have bear heads on them. I let them sleep with them when they could move around pretty well, that way I wouldn't worry about suffocation. Now they are way addicted to them and can't sleep without them. I bought and extra one for both of them out of fear that if we lost them, we were in big trouble.

We just started putting loveys in the crib with them, DS could care less, he rarely finds his, but DD has become obsessed, she willl scoot herself to wherever her lovey is, chew on it for a bit, and then fall asleep on top of it. I think it really helps her, we have had ZERO protest crying since she found it.

Here is a pic of her and her lovey after her morning nap:

We call them woobies and we got them at Carters right before we took a trip because I wanted them to have something familar in their pack and play while we were travelling. They were 10 months when we did this. They dont really seem to care if they are there or not, but Derek has a small stuffed dinosaur that he has had since probably about 4 months and he holds it at night but does not bring it out of the crib in the morning.
