OK-So my boys have finished their meds(one dose left).... Anthony seems fine. Nicholas on the other hand-looks like it got WORSE, not better! ACK! His poor mouth is all white. He doesn't seem bothered by it though. Do I call Dr for more meds, or do I try the violet stuff people mentioned??

I have been boiling their nipples and pacifiers every day since...and washing their hands after a feeding. When will it stop?!!?

You are SOOO not alone w/ this. Mine had it right after birth and I treated it 2 times in a row with that crappy, messy, useless Nystatin topical stuff. No better- then followed that w/ the Diflucan.. STILL HAD IT!!! I decided it wasn't bothering them so big deal.

Went in for their 4 month shots and lo and behold- Nicolas still has it! He said if it isn't bothering them it's okay and yeast in the mouth is very normal.. HOWEVER-- he did say that the violet treatment is what he recommends above anything else!! I was shocked! I didn't even know about it until he wrote it all down for me and told me it is what he did for his kids. Paint it on for 2 nites in a row and voila!

p.s. Mine had it soo bad in the beginning it would bleed!! I had NO IDEA what it was! Me, being the idiot that I am, thought it was just formula build up!

Thanks! I think the Nystatin is useless too! And it's a horrible MESS! My boys have learned to keep their mouths SHUT and proceed to spit it back out-without opening those mouths of theirs! They wear more than take in their mouth! It's so gross! Maybe I will try the violet stuff first then....

    Where would I get it?!!?

I THINK you can get GV at the drugstore, just ask the pharmacist, and they should have it (no need for an Rx). Also, are you BFing? that can be passing it back and forth-- one tip I got when I had it, was to wash off the bbs w/ a vinegar/water rinse each time and that will help kick it. HTH some!!! Good luck- the whole yeast thing stinks!

Ick my DS and DD had it. DD's cleared up with just one round of that Nystatin stuff, but DS had to go on the stuff twice. I hated it too...it was so sticky and he would spit it out everywhere. Luckily it cleared up finally but I was about to try that violet stuff too, I heard it works wonderfully!

The trouble with the Nystatin stuff is that it contains sugar, which yeast lives on, so it sort of defeats the purpose, unless it is a very mild case. For the rest of us, it doesnt do the trick at all. I did use the viotet stuff, it sort of worked, it got rid of it several times, only to find a few days later it would be back!!!! ARG!! So this is what I did and it worked. I cut out all sugar in my diet, all yeast (bread etc.) no red meat, no dairy.... I was thinking whats left for me to eat then, but somehow I managed. I started taking GSE (grapefruit seed extract) and acidipholus. I would sterilized their suckies, rinse my breasts with vinegar and water, all the laundry was treated with vinegar, sheets, clothes... everyday. I tried a new type of medicine, called Diflucan I believe it was called. It took months for me to get to the point of doing all this everyday, but it did dissapear. You can also use the grapefruit seed extract on the inside of their mouths, diluted with a cotton swab (much cleaner than the purple stuff), on your breasts as well, in the laundry instead of vinager... you get the idea.
Hope this is of some use.
    Good luck!

We had it on/off for months too. Gentian violet is the only thing that worked. put towels on the floor, let your babies go naked and be prepared for a ridiculous mess.
