What can cause an infant to throw up? My 5 1/2 motnh old DD started throwing up tonight after we put the babies to bed. I've since gotten her up and am holding her propped up. She doesn't have a fever but was acting cranky all day today. She has thrown up enough that she was throwing up bile. I did try to nurse her a bit and she promptly threw that up. Don't want her to get dehydrated.

We have silent reflux that is under control with prevacid.

We just started trying baby food and she tried butternut squash today. I'm thinking it may be the cause of the vomitting.

We are breastfeeding. The only differences in my diet today was having some watermelon and blueberries.

Any tips, any advice, any ideas?

If she tolerates it, continue bfing. I know when my two got a horrible tummy bug they could not handle the volume from bfing, so I had to pump and give them little syringes of ebm/pedialyte until they could keep something down. It could be a virus or be from the solids, but most likely it will pass soon (I hope!!).

She may habe a stomach bug. DS and DD both had a stomach flu at about that age and were throwing up EVERYWHERE!!! It was so sad. The Dr's told me to hold off on milk for a few days because putting milk into a tummy that already is upset is just going to make it more upset.. I hate to say it but i would get a bottle of pedialite and give just that to her to make sure she doesnt dehydrate. and get her into tthe Dr tomorrow.

Maybe she has a stomach bug. I would call the Ped and see if they want to see her. I hope she feels better soon. :hug99:

Sounds like a bug--we had one at 4 months (thank you, daycare). Pedialyte helps, and I would call the pedi. Just a warning, when I think stomach virus, I think maybe 2 or 3 days. For us, it was a 10 day affair--our house was basically covered in old towels. I hope yours is short-lived; but you will make it through to the other side. And they won't lose as much weight as you think they will (mine didn't lose any, really, in spite of not really eating very much for a week).

    Hugs!

    Thanks for your replies!!

I'm thinking it was the squash. She threw up one more time and then was able to hold down some breast milk. She slept and nursed the rest of the night without any more throwing up!!! Thank goodness. None of my other DC has ever thrown up as infants so it was very surprising. We are going to keep an eye on her today but she has seemed to be back to her normal self.
