My Nathan (I have a b/g twins) is the smaller twin at birth, and now as well. His appetite has always been smaller than Gizelle (the other twin) and is only managing about 31/2oz each feed, every 3hrly. I know most mums will say throwing up milk is common for babies, but when should I be overly concern? He vomits an average 2-3 times a week, and usually while we're feeding or shortly after we feed and burped him. Should I bring him to the doc cos of this? Pls help! :(

I think 2-3 times a week is no concern at all. My first (9lbs+ baby) was a major happy spitter, up to 10-20 times a day, happy, laughing and gaining weight rapidly, she ate super super quick, no matter what I tried, she's still 95%.

My twin boy suffered from reflux, he was crying, screaming and would only eat because then he didn't feel the pain. He would spit up blood as well because his esophagus was irritated. He was put on Zantac without result, tried hypoallergenic (without result) and then moved to Prevacid at 2 1/2 months (liquid) and 4 months (tablets) and the tablets made a major difference.

My twin girl spit up 3-4 times a day, just a little, never a concern to me.

As long as it's not projectile, no blood, no pain, no crying, etc. I wouldn't worry. All my kids had episodes of vomitting occassionally. To the extent they threw up their entire bottle, they were fine afterwards, sometimes I think we just force them to eat when they don't really want or they make a wrong movement. Again 2-3 times a week shouldn't be a problem unless your child is experiencing other symptons and/or not gaining enough weight.

    HTH.

I would definitely talk to your ped. Throwing up is really different than spitting up.
Especially for a smaller baby....you want to make sure he isn't having an allergy to milk proteins or other digestive issues. Better to be safe than sorry.

I would call your pedi and see about switching formulas. 2 - 3 times a week really doesn't sound very frequent compared to the number of times babies eat in a day. But your pedi might suggest trying Enfamil AR, that helped my girls tremendously.

I agree with PPs...I would tell your Ped about it...but 2 or 3 times a week is really very infrequent (at least in my book...Daniel threw up 3 or 4 times a day for about 3 months!). As long as he's gaining weight, there's not much reason to be concerned.

Ditto to the pp's. I would call the Ped or the Nurse and double check with them. But 3-4 times a week is really not that much and as long as he is gaining weight it is probably nothing to be concerned about.

Thank you for all ur replies! I called the clinic ytd and they said it shud not be a concern if it is 2-3 times a week, esp when diarrhoea is absent. However, I am still concern and try not to 'overfeed' Nathan, in case he gets too full and starts to throw up again...

Will definitely ask abt changing the formula, cos I'm not too comfortable with Similac either, the formula just don't dissolve well.
