Thought they were fraternal, now they are saying identical

Discussion in 'Pregnancy Help' started by TickledPinkTwice, Jan 6, 2009.

I am 26 weeks and up until today they have assumed that the girls were fraternal. We thought Baby A has a posterior and Baby B had an anterior.Today at the MFM ultrasound, they were able to get a good look at the placenta. They said that the placenta has a T which means that they are more than likely identical. Has any one been told they are having fraternal and found out they were having identical or vice versa? Thanks!

If you have 2 placenta's and 2 amniotic sacs (di/di twins)there is really no way to know for sure if they are identical or fraternal (unless you are having b/g twins). If you have 1 placenta and sacs (mono/di twins), more than likely they are identical but there is a chance the placenta could have fused together looking like 1. If you have 1 placenta and 1 sac (Mo/mo twins) they are identical.

From what it sounds like you are going to have to wait until they are born to know for sure. If they have different blood types, then they are fraternal. If they have the same blood type, you may have to do a DNA test to get a definite answer.

    Good Luck!

you can't tell based on the placenta's if the babies are identical or not, even di di babies with seperate everything can be identical, DNA testing is the only way to know for sure for same sex twins.

we were told initially by and ultrasound tech b/c of two placenta's that our girls were fraternal, but they matched 15 out of 15 markers in DNA testing and are definately identical! G.L. with your pregnancy!

Good question, so pretty much unless you have boy girl then have them tested.
