Okay, I have been having heartburn for a while and it seemed to get under control and now it is out of control so much it is causing acid reflux. I have to sleep sitting up to keep it at bay. I know to avoid certain foods that cause it but it seems everything annoyes it now. I have been taking TUMS but they stopped working, then I am taking Mylanta, which helps for a short time.

My acupuncturist suggested cantaloupe and watermelon because they are alkaline but that doesn't help anymore either. I told the dr. about it but she said it is normal and didn't offer anything stronger.

    Any other suggestions?

Aw, that was the very worst thing I had to deal with while pregnant. Like you, I started with TUms, then moved on to Mylanta, then Pepcid AC, until my doctor finally prescribed me something. I had to sleep like the Elephant Man,propped up on pillows!
You should really try to get a 'scrip; tell your doc you are REALLY suffering. Im sorry you're dealing with this; nothing helped me in the end until Annika's head was delivered from my windpipe!

I would also strongly recommend getting your doc to write you a script. It was the only thing that helped me, after going through a bottle of tums a week!!! Nobody told me about watermelon, its great though because I love it!!!

    Good luck!!

I too suffer from heartburn EVERY single day. Usually a tums or two does the trick but I fear it is only going to get worse. I read somewhere that the hormone that causes heart burn also causes hair to grow on baby's head so hopefully this means we'll have fuzzy headed babies.

My doc put me on Prevacid. I didn't use it every day but when I did, it made a BIG difference!!!

acid reflux is associated with heartburn right? cuz my acid reflux has been so bad, it has actually made me unexepectedly projectile vomit (sorry TMI! )... and tums is no help. but i find that NOT eating certain foods before bed (i have it the worst at bedtime), has helped a little. who knew chocolate caused acid reflux (in a baaad way) ?

I have been having this same problem. I did not realize that is what it was. I see the OB tommorow and definately am going to get a prescription or something. It is the worst at night though when I lay down.

I was asking my OB this same thing at my appointment yesterday, and he recommended Gaviscon. I got some today and it works GREAT! He said it is particularly good for pregnant women because unlike TUMS & Mylanta it sits at the top of your stomach so that the acid does not escape up the esophagus. It tastes pretty gross and foams up in your mouth a little but it works!

I had horrible reflux/heartburn that caused me to have morning sickness up until about 27 weeks when I begged my doc for some help. I got a scrip for Protonix (proton pump inhibitor) and it's the best thing ever. No need to suffer!

Did you try Smoothie Tums? They are a THOUSAND times better than reg tums or rolaids etc. and they have been helping me out...it may be worth a try before you see your dr and get a presciption.

Yeah those are the ones I had, went through two bottles of them. They stopped working. My acupuncturist gave me something to take, which kind of helped. I go to the dr. next Thursday so I will ask again. My DH and friend said that seems pointless since they are taking bets that I will pop next week. LOL

I would try the Gaviscon too. I used to take that when the docs thought my gallbladder was hearburn/acid reflux. They do foam in your mouth though, so chew as quickly as possible and drink some water afterward. I didn't know it was safe in pregnancy or I'd have recommended it earlier! Sorry!

btw: I vote on you making it through next weekend...but after that, you'll be done. Looks like you'll beat me after all! ;)

I was put on Prevacid and it worked like a charm....it was completely gone and I had it 24/7....I couldn't eat anything cause it was so bad. See if you can get a script for it!

I HATED the heartburn and acid reflux during pregnancy...could not WAIT till I delivered so that I would have relief. AND, I delivered three weeks ago and have not felt one bit of it....THANK GOODNESS. I did take Zantac 150 the last month and it really helped. I will also tell you that both of my babies had full heads of hair...so don't know if that saying about heatburn = hair is true...but it was for me.
Hang in there....relief is around the corner.

I had horrible heartburn starting around 17 weeks. At 20 weeks, I was going through Pepcid AC 2x/day and a bottle of Tums in less than a week. I got a prescription for Protonix from my peri, and it has worked wonders! I never would have been able to survive this pregnancy without it! I have had 2 or 3 episodes of mild breakthough heartburn since starting it, but other than that, it has completely disappeared! It was the BEST!
