Think this would work?

Maybe I could suffer until they grow out of the rear facing car seats? How long would that be and what car seats come next? Are the next ones any smaller than the rear facing ones?

If you are talking about a rear facing carseat of something like a snug ride then they will be out of those at about 20 pounds. So the next step is a convertible car seat that must also go rear facing until they are over 20# and one year of age. Then you can turn them around if you choose to do so at that time. They are much more bulkier than the infant seats so you will need more room at that time. Sorry to be of no help.

Rachel is right, rear-facing until 20lbs AND 1 year. We switched to convertibles around 8 months, still rear-facing. They are more bulky than the Snugrides. Good luck with your decision!

we are in the convertible seats now, but still rear facing despite them being over 20 lbs. and a year. From what i was reading, current research is pointing toward it being safer to keep them rear facing until closer to 30 pounds. So i don't know if we will make it THAT long, but i plan to keep them that way as long as possible. And they are more bulky, but they don't recline as far, so it isn't so cramped for the front seat. my hsuband used to have a tough time because he is 6'4 and couldn't really get the seat back all the way because it ran into the infant carrier. he doesn't have that problem now in our pilot or acord.
we got the alpha omega elite's for our primary car and evenflo um....titan i think.... for the secondary car (the ones that are 50ish bucks).
someone had some nice links in a prior post (within the alst few months) comparing different car seats and their features and reliability and approximate cost, etc. you might want to look for it or maybe someone else has that info? someone else also had the informatino regarding the rear facing to 30 lbs. recommendation. anyone know where that would be?!? (aren't i helpful- i know it exists, but NO idea where!!! :p )

Thanks for your responses. I thought I could stick it out for a couple of months, but a year just will not do. Looks like I am still car shopping <_<

I would check out the Su I nshine Kids Radian carseats. It is the narrowest convertible carseat out there, and is still very highly rated for safety. I bought one for my older DD to replace her practically new Marathon when we found out we were having twins. It was the only way I could fit a convertible and 2 infant carriers in my car, which since it is less than a year old I was NOT wanting to replace!
    Good Luck!

Well, I thought I was going to need a new car, but I ended up sticking it out in my 97 Honda Accord. As pp pointed out, although the convertible seats are bulkier, they do not recline as much, which gives you a tiny bit more room behind the front seat than the snugrides. My girls are big and outgrew their infant seats at about 7.5 months. If I were you, I would go check out whatever carseat you are planning to use next and put it in the back seat to see if it is any better. I think some of it also depends on how much you drive. I only drive short distances and often do not take the girls (even though the convertible seats are installed permanently.) If I were commuting to work and daycare every day in a metropolitan area, I would be driving a safer, bigger car!!
