They hate food with texture!

The girls have been on baby food since 5.5 months and have done really well with all the pureed stuff, but we've had a really hard time with texture. They gag and then refuse to eat anymore.

Things they will eat now: cut up and smooshed pears, pineapple, bannana, and peaches; verrrry soft cheese, very soft cheerios (in formula), most 3rd foods.

Things they will not touch: smooshed cooked carrots, pasta, or puffs, they won't even gum things like biter bisquits.

Any ideas as to how I can transition them into bigger chunks/finger foods?

Cindy, I think they are doing great! I would just keep offering a big variety and they will get used to the textures. Gagging is a pretty normal reflex when they are trying new things.

I agree with Becky. My girls won't touch stage 3 with a ten foot pole and are still on a lot of stage 2 purees. I give them the things I know they like everyday and now and then introduce something new. If they don't like it, I let it go and try it again days/weeks later. I figure they will get it eventually. Other than stage 2, this is what my girls eat, in case it gives you some ideas:

Lots of fruits (some in mesh feeder): bananas, berries, nectarines, watermelon; pancakes, waffles, toast, cheese, frozen peas, crackers (soft, like Ritz). They did eat chicken once, haven't since. That's about it.

Mine are/were the same way. Ritz crackers did it for us. I have no idea why, but some real people food in small pieces was what got them to start liking other textures. Stage 3 with pasta in it - they just scrape it off of their tongues. BUt they love pasta pick ups now. :pardon: Go figure. We just kept trying until something worked. All I can say is keep trying, and best of luck!

Mine were doing that but I started thickening the vegetables and fruit with rice cereal or oatmeal. I gradually made it thicker and eventually they started to accept some texture.

Just keep offering, they will eventually get it. Gagging was all a part of the process for my girls.

I did the same thing, started thickening their food.
Mine didn't get the hang of thicker foods until they were about 11 months old or so. I just kept on trying and trying. As for the puffs, they JUST started eating those, at 14 months. I would say to give them new things to try and if they don't like it, try again at a later date..and not to stress it, I did and it didn't work, they still went at their own pace! :FIFblush:

you could try getting toys that have textures on them -- nubbies, using a finger toothbrush in their mouths, etc. to acclimate them --

EI has done that with my son and it really helped him out.

They are doing well! Just keep at it... eventually it won't be so hard for them. Practice makes perfect! :)
