They act like I'm feeding them poison!

    Hi, Everyone.

We've tried a few "solid" foods. We tried cereal and juice at first and the babies make these terrible faces. Then they shutter after swallowing. My DD gags and coughs (not that she's not ready for solids, she sucked and swallowed a cracker just fine). I am breastfeeding and read somewhere that bananas taste more like breastmilk than even cereal mixed with breastmilk. They hate that, too.

I know that they're just starting out, and need to practice and learn and all. My other two kids seemed to have taken a little better to starting solids. I was just wondering, is there anyone out there who had babies that wouldn't eat too much baby food and pretty much went right to table foods? Of course table foods that were soft and easy to gum instead of chew.

Nikki, I think the thing w/starting them on simple foods is so that you can track their potential to allergies! They might just be getting used to the texture. Let them take a week off and try again. You are supposed to do one thing at a time for 3 days so that you know what's affecting them if they have a reaction.

Water it down more and I would use breastmilk. No sense in getting into juice at this early age.

I totally agree with Diane. Start off slow with the solid foods. Babies sometimes like their solids really runny (like soup) and some like their solids thick (like pudding). It sounds like they are getting used to the texture of the food, if they open up their mouths and eat more, then they like the food. In your case I'd experiment with the texture, that sounds like the culprit here.

I have one who LOVES solids and one who won't even open his mouth!! The mashed banana's were dd's favorite so far (she is bf too), but ds won't have anything yet- each baby is different and they don't need the food, its just for practice.

I am starting with only one food every 3 days. I only try feeding them once a day, and that's not even consistant because they don't seem interested. I tried some juice in a bottle a couple of times, but they only tasted the drips their tongues because they wouldn't suck the bottle.

I'm not pushing it on them because I want them to think that food is a good thing, not bad. I don't want to start any bad habits this young.

I had a friend who said that her baby wouldn't eat baby foods and pretty much waited til she was a bit older and went on to easy table foods. I was just curious if anyone else out there had a simular experience.

One of my twins reacts similarly to baby food. My ped suggested altering the texture and try again. Turns out she's not so fond of the very thin purees that you are "supposed" to start out with. She prefers thicker textures like mashed sweet potatoes and mashed avocados. There aren't any lumps or chunks still but the texture is a far cry from the very thin texture of the pureed bananas, apples and pears that we had been trying.

The thing with table food like pp's is to use only "single" foods (to watch for allergies) and also do not use any salt or spices when preparing it. Put salt or spices in after you take the babies' portions out.

Your babies are about the same age as mine. We still don't give solids with any regularity since it is just about practice at this point. I've been trying to do it once a day but some days we don't bother if we're busy doing other stuff.
