Okay, so we are having trouble (read my previous posts) getting our 13.5 month olds to wear their helmets on the back of our bikes. DH and I got into a big fight tonight because I suggested that if we get helmets of our own to wear then that might help Jack and Lily get more into wearing them. He proceeded to get a disgusted look on his face and say "so you are saying that if I wear a red shirt then they would want to wear a red shirt??????"

No, you dummy head annoying man I am saying who cares what we look like on our bikes, lets buy some cheap helmets and wear them so that our precious babies do not risk getting hurt you silly silly silly silly man!

THANK YOU, i FEEL BETTER NOW

My mom died of a head injury falling from her bike in her neighborhood. SHE WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET. It was just a nice leisurely ride too! I would tell him to wear the helmet even if you didn't have kids! It's just the smart thing to do. Sorry to be a downer, but this is an important subject to me. As for the kids, I let them have them in the house so they could get used to them. They love them now and won't ride anything without them.

    Good luck!

We have a family friend who was riding a bike when he was a teen and he ended up hitting a curb and falling off. He got an awful head injury and went from a genius in all honors classes, to low-functioning special education classes due to the brain injury. That man needs to get his priorities straight and wear a helmet! What would the kids do if something happened to one of you, let alone if they were injured?

Sorry he's driving you nuts. :hug99:

Actually, my own life was saved 3 years ago when I was hit on my bike by a driver running a red light. I was wearing a helmet (the first time that I ever wore one because the friend I was riding with would not ride with me unless I wore one and she lent me one - saved my life) and it saved my life as my head bounced directly off the pavement. I am a big helmet proponent for cycling outings but am trying to convince DH that it is the same thing for neighborhood rides.

Wearing a red shirt is not a life saving piece of equipment! I would liken it to a seatbelt myself. I'm sorry your husband is being a butthead. Hey, get your husband to read this thread and maybe he'll realize this is something that's important!

To ahmerl's husband - Oh, come on. You know this is important. Don't be so self conscious.

oh i would definately make him wear a helmet. safety first and that will teach the kids to do it also. they learn from mommy and daddy. oh i could definately think of someone more annoying then DH and that is "the mother in law" at least DH you can smack his butt and send him to his room with no booty for awhile and maybe he will listen.
ism sorry he is being a butthead about it and cant see why. he knows it's important to wear one but probably feels funny wearing one...no excuse...maybe have him wear his inside the house first to let him get used to it.

hugs to you :hug99: good luck

Hey, my response would've been, "yep, they'll want to wear a red t-shirt too, they want to do EVERYTHING just like Mommy and Daddy!" If that'll shut him up, so be it.

It IS important and a HUGE safety concern, so whatever means you have to use to go about getting him to wear one, use it. No, shirts aren't an important piece of safety equipment, but neither is food and our girls could care less what's on their plate/table if mommy and daddy are eating. They want whatever is on OUR plate, just because WE are eating it. Same would go for important safety gear. If mommy and Daddy have it on, they want it too......

I'd even go so far to use the 'well I jumped off a bridge, they would to' example. Kids at that age want to do everything their parents do, and have 200% trust in us that we'll show them the right way and the safe way (which is why they'd think it's OK to follow us off the bridge.....)

    Men......

I keep coming back to this.

So your life was saved by a bike helmet and yet you both still do not wear them?

    Isn't that enough to convince?

We live at the beach and ride "beach bikes" mostly on the beach. We have not worn helmets on the beach. When/if "road riding" I do wear a helmet...but have not done this type of riding since I was preggo with the kids.

Now we will be doing mostly neighborhood riding and will be wearing helmets. Thank you for your input.

To me this argument is pointless because there should be no ands ifs or buts about it! You both should be wearing helmets for your OWN safety and to set an example to your children. Your husband is definately being rediculous. Does he wear a seatbelt when he drives a car????

THAT is why he is the MOST ANNOYING EVER...because I am sure he is just trying to push my buttons - which, worked very well. Yes, he wears a seat belt while driving. I told you guys, he is completely annoying right now....

by the way, he is an amazing father and husband...WHEN he is NOT being completely annoying :)

Oh ahmerl, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to come off sounding like your dh is a bad man. It is totally possible to be a WONDERFUL father and husband and still make some very dumb decisions in life. I hate when you come on to vent about something and then feel like people are making a total judgment on you or your man as a whole. I just think that the seatbelt in a car and the helmet on the bike can be used with your husband as a comparison argument. Sorry he is being such a poo poo head in this situation. Hopefully he will come to his senses.
