The words I never thought I'd hear

I'm away on a business trip for the first time since my girls were 9 weeks old. I miss them like crazy and even thought its *just* 3 days (got here last night, coming home Saturday), I just want to blow off my career and go home to be with them. But thats not the reason for this post.

I just got off the phone with DH. Tonight is bath night.... He called and just said "You are my hero! Seriously how do you do this?!" Ahhh sweet justice. I love my DH and he is great with the girls and totally involved, but we both know I do most of the baby care. He's never given them baths by himself, but I didn't want to micromanage, so when I spoke to him earlier tonight and he said "I'll just bring them in the shower" I didn't comment on how I thought that was a really bad idea given that they are going thru this phase where they don't like water on their faces. (holy run-on sentence- sorry!) Plus they like to take baths together now because they hate to be 'left out' of anything.

So he tried his shower experiment and described it like this. "I put M in the pnp and she started screaming. Then I brought A in the shower and she started screaming... which made M scream more because she thought I was killing A in the shower...." He scrapped the idea of showers and put them both in the bath and then realized that its really difficult logistically to bathe them at the same time.

Is it wrong that this pleases me just a little bit because he's been known to say 'Just throw them in the bath! Why do you have to make sure a big deal out of it?' I'm sitting in a hotel room lonely checking TS when I should be working and eating chocolate cake for dinner while 'poor' DH realizes how much work I actually do at home.

Nope, not wrong at all. Like Maureen said, it is always nice to be appreciated. Glad you got to hear those words. :)

Oh gosh no don't feel bad! I just went away unexpectedly for 4.5 days (my father died, than was brought back to life....... long story) and my DH almost died himself! Mind you, I did ALL the cooking and menu planning before I left, picked out their outfits for 5 days each (per his request), and gave him a ton of things to do with them. He still was wiped!
I think that it really takes more than 24 hours for them to see how much work really is involved.
When I got back, he said in all honesty, "do you really want to do this? Do you really want to be a mom? I'd quit if I were you and go back to work." (I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant putting them in daycare and not 'returning them' to the hospital / IVF ward. ha ha ha ha!)

Don't feel bad at all. I know I am not away but one afternoon I needed to get stuff done around the house and DH watched the twinnies on the floor. He played and rolled around with them. After about 1 hour he just kept saying "wheh" and sighing. I just laughed so hard and said, "it isn't easy is it? You think that me sitting home all day with them and playing is easy when it is really exhausting isn't it?" He just looked at me and said "yes, I need a nap".

:rotflmbo: Same thing happened to me!!! Dh always thought it was exhausting to be at work all day, and while yes it is (I work close to full time also), it is a ENTIRELY different exhausting to be home with them 24/7 :vava: Then when I went back to work and he stayed home with them 1-2 days a week, he called me at work the first day and said:
"I am soooo sorry I didn't understand what this is like, it is so hard"

It was sweet justice :icon_biggrin: :blbl:

Oh that is AWSOME!!!! Congrats!! I just love it. Just to be appreciated! I to have to travel for work occasionaly. ABout 2 times a year for 3-5 days. It KILLS me. My Dh watches the kids during the day and works from 3:30ish to 12:30 ish. He is a superstar husband/father. Although looses his patience A LOT with them and YELLS way to much- again that's another post! With my first son who is now 4, I would not have trusted him alone with him for more than a few minutes. So it is almost inconcieveable that he is not with him and thenm TWINS during the day. We have had a lot of these moments. I still do all the bathes and major stuff. My twins are 21 months and I definatly stress when I go away. Mostly before I leave.

I am a little better now. I have more confidence in DH and the babies are older (which is good and bad) As long as he has back up- my mil or better yet my mom. I am fine. Although I check in abour 10 times a day.

I want you to rest up and enjoy yourself and your alone time outside of your meetings. I really struggle with that and just want to provide you with support. You have to be gone anyway so enjoy. I had the best sleep of my life, I think a few months ago. I had to go to Vegas for a meeting. We stayed at a really nice hotel- the beds were unbeleviable. I had been sick for about a month prior to going. Who can get well with 3 little kids waering you down! I went to bed at 7:30 and got up at 7:30. I don't even think I moved once. I'm still drawing off that nights sleep :). Moral of my story rest, and recharge! You probally are much less of a stress case than me. My frinds with kids (career type friends) actually look forward to getting away for a few days. UGGH NOT ME!! I'm such a worrier!!

Anyway- I've gone on and on

Your post just hit close to home@!

By the way what is your occupation?

So funny! My dh is a stay home daddy, so he does it all with the boys and is awesome at it......but he has yet to give them a single bath!! Scares him, I think. ;)

Leighann, I think it's great that he gets to be with the kids for 3 whole days so he can really see what it means to be a full time parent. My husband is also very very involved and fortunately, we ALWAYS bathe the girls together as a team. But it would be interesting to leave him with them for 3 days where he has ALL the responsibilties I have by being with them all day. I am always happy when a husband (or mother) finally understands and appreciates just how much really goes into taking care of the kids, so good for you. Even if you don't go on anymore business trips for a long time to come, he will most likely never forget to appreciate you and all the hard work you do to take care of the kiddos.

It's hard to travel for work, I have been doing too much of it so far this year! Luckily, my DH is the bath guy at our house. What causes him the most grief when I'm gone is feeding them. I just write down what to give them for each meal because he gets stresed over figuring it out for himself.

He definitely realizes how much I do when I'm gone and he has to do it. And he does help me out a lot!!

That is nice to hear. Whenever I'm gone for an hour or two (not often) I get "They were just fine, like always."

Meh, your hubbies are wusses. I've been bathing all three of our kids pretty much from day one. I can't fit them all in the tub together anymore, but you adjust.

Its hard to imagine a dad not having at least some experience with dressing, feeding, bathing their kids. Some fellows have it pretty good.

I was going to add this last night! The twinks are way better behaved for Dh than for me! I always hear, "We were great, they arent that hard to take care of!" Yeah and i see, that no dishes were done, the house is a disaster, the babies are a mess, oh look they had OREOS and no one cleaned them or the highchairs, etc....

Glad to see your DH got the full extent of things last night!
