We are now at an age where the boys are moving and getting into things. I want to teach them right from wrong, what's dangerous, etc... But I don't want to use the word "no" when I can help it. I don't want to sound like a broken record player. I want to save the word "no" for more dangerous items-stove, outlets, wires, fireplace.

What do/have you used in place of the word no? Do you redirect? It seems like they just KNOW that it's not ok-and continue to go back! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Good question! For me, I redirect. However, when they are on the changing table, and are moving when I'm changing one of their diapers, I've started saying NO. I do this because they do stop and it's dangerous for them to be moving around - and, of course, they need a new diaper. I usually repeat it a few times. Nikola is normally the one that does it. He smiles at me when I say no, so at least I know his feelings aren't hurt, but he does stop.

I also redirect, but when things are dangerous -pulling up in the bath tub- I say no repeatedly.......I'm not sure if its sinking in though.

    Good luck

My cousin who has 3 toddler girls uses the word "danger" a lot instead of no when it fits.

    Great question!!
When I say NO Maia laughs and shakes her head! She thinks its a game. Ugh! And Sofie will just look at me, scowl and continue what she was doing. I have no idea where these girls came from!

My pedi gave me a handout about discipline at our last appointment, I'm going to see if I can find it tonight and post it tomorrow.

I swear the boys know the word "no"!! Where we live now, we have no dining room, just an overly cluttered kirchen table that we nevere eat at(we outgrew this place the day the boys came home!!) But anyway, we eat at tray tables in the living room and they love to pull on them... we say no, they crawl away or at least act like it, then go right back to it with a grin on their faces!! They know the word, they just don't listen to it!! They ar jsut like their fathr... \

    Sorry for typos... Austin helping!!

I say.. "we dont do that..." and I also say their name and use my eyes (stern look).. If They keep on.. I will say no and then re-direct. If they still keep on.. i pop their butt.. Doesnt hurt.. (they dont even notice half the time..) But the noise scares them.. They dont know where it came from..

I usually re-direct....I feel so bad when saying 'no!' to my DS - he actually starts bawling for 5-10 minutes when I say it to him! He's so sensitive and I think it really hurts his feelings, but sometimes I have to say it if he is putting himself in danger

I was just thinking yesterday that my daughter is going to think "Leah, no" is her full name! I redirect her but she still continues to do what she wants. I have no idea what else I could use.

when i say "no-no" ivana stops what she's [not supposed to be] doing, and moves on to something else. she also will mimick me "na na" lol marina, on the other hand, just gives me a look like "yeah right" and keeps doing. i try redirectiring her a lot more... she's a tough one.
